About Me
I am a law student at washington/seattle">seattle-university">washington/seattle">Seattle University School of Law. I spent the previous three years working at youth centers and teaching subjects including: English as a foreign language, media and communications, Spanish, nutrition, exercise, and critical thinking skills. During my college years, when I was not in class, the pool, or making pizzas, I worked at a summer camp as a counselor. I hope to use my expertise of working with kids and my future law degree to fight for women and children rights.
I had my first washington/washington/seattle">seattle">tutoring jobs in high school, as a peer mentor. I helped other kids in subjects that I did well in, and also assisted a Spanish teacher with her freshman class. In university, I tutored a couple immigrants in English, as well as tutored a few children in English while I was studying in Spain. More recently, I tutored a number of adolescent girls in Jordan in English language, and would also quiz them before exams in math.
My washington/washington/seattle">seattle">tutoring style is focused on enabling students to reach the answers by themselves. I do this through teaching critical skills, giving them the building blocks to enhance the knowledge they already have, going off cues found in readings and in the questions, and if necessary, giving them clues on how to reach the appropriate conclusion. I also work very diligently to build up the confidence
of the student in that subject. On multiple occasions, I have worked with kids who honestly believed they were just stupid, and nothing could remedy that fact, which of coarse was not true. Each of us has the capacity to continue learning, sometimes we just need to discover how we learn best.
Experience
I have been washington/washington/seattle">seattle">tutoring since middle school, when I was a peer mentor (through high school). In university, I tutored immigrants in language skills.
In Peace Corps, I taught English and Spanish to both youth and adults, including the local police force and staff at a 5 star hotel. In addition to language, I also taught youth health, critical thinking, and leadership skills.
After Peace Corps, I ran a media and technology magnet after-school program for middle-school aged youth.
Approach
I very much believe in helping the student get the the answer his or herself, but provide learning tools to help them get there.
