Fun Facts
Like any student, I have many hobbies. I love to play the guitar and piano (yet I find myself in constant need for practice!). I enjoy the study of human bones and ancestry, a hobby that I feed in my Anthropology lessons at University. I wish I read more than I do but I am a die-hard SciFi/Fantasy movie/tv watcher (please approach me with any suggestions!). When I do read it is usual Shakespeare or 18th and 19th century English novels (Jane Austen, Charlotte Bronte, etc). As for sports, I play with a Chicago rugby team on occasion.
About Me
I am finishing up my university education this year and find myself reflecting on my past experiences and what I see in my future. In applying to college 3.5 years ago I had no REAL idea what I wanted to do (let alone major in!). I simply enjoyed learning everything and I didn't understand why my friends were so certain on their goals. Now I have come to realize that my many interests are attributes I am fond of and I am glad I took the time in university to explore different areas of study. I will have ended up with a Anthropology Major and Biology Minor from chicago">Loyola University Chicago in Spring 2013 and plan on completing a Masters of Education (Elementary Science) sometime in the near future in the hopes of spreading my enthusiasm for learning.
My previous chicago">tutoring experience took place during my 9 month study abroad experience in Rome, Italy. I had 5 students with whom I had separate 1-1 meetings for English lessons. English conversational skills were high in demand so, in advance, I would think of topics to discuss that would interest my student. Other times I would correct written assignments the student had prepared. The meeting place was in an area most comfortable to the student as to assure the greatest amount of absorption of the material. I have also been a teacher's aid in a 2nd grade classroom so I have come to know various styles of teaching and how best to engage with students in a fun way.
I have had a few inspirational teachers throughout the years and hope to utilize the skills they taught me during a chicago">tutoring assignment. These include kindness, entertainment and exploration. Kindness: In middle school and high school I understand how the social situations can be brutal and demeaning. The surest way of deflecting insults is with kindness and understanding. I had a math-middle-school/illinois/chicago">middle school math teacher who I will always remember for such virtues. Entertainment: learning should be exciting! And if there ever is a boring topic, the best way to deal with it is to make it as fun as possible (acronyms, songs, or even pictures) to help the student understand. Exploration: School is the arena in which real discovery and learning can take place. As long as you apply yourself to the material, it can open up many doors to unimaginable discovery. I will do my best to be on the same page as the teacher so that the transition from classroom to chicago">tutoring and chicago">tutoring to classroom can be as seamless as possible. Let's do this thing
