Fun Facts
I'm not a big T.V. person, even though I enjoy going to the movies. In fact, I don't watch T.V. for months. Can you believe I have NEVER watched one episode of "Scandal" or "Empire"! When I do turn the T.V. on, I'm drawn to shows that are related to criminal investigations and I will watch them for hours. It's very odd to enjoy watching something that scares you at the same time.
About Me
I am a high school English teacher, Yearbook Adviser, and Chairperson for the English Department at my school. I have been teaching 10th grade English for 8 years. The two things I enjoy most about teaching would be having the chance to help inspire someone's dreams, and challenging myself to be even better than the year before.
Experience
With over 8 years experience as a classroom teacher, I can honestly say I am doing what I love. I've always had a deep passion for teaching and learning. One of my favorite experiences happened about 2 years ago when I tutored 3 of the nicest young elementary school students who needed a little help in reading. I would see them every week. Working with them helped me realize how much of an impact teachers can actually make on a student's life. It is a wonderful feeling.
Approach
As a kid, I was a high-achieving student. I started reading when I was 4 and once got in trouble for sneaking a Social Studies book home for the weekend. At the same time, I struggled severely in math. This frustrated me. How could I learn other things so quickly while math resembled a foreign language from a far away land? Having both those successes and failures helps me understand my students a little better. Knowledge, compassion, dedication and kindness. These are the gifts I provide.

Reading Comprehension Tutoring
I love to read and teaching different novels and short stories to my students is always fun. When I read, I become an unseen character in the story observing the setting and character conflicts firsthand. I help my students learn to think critically about what they read by asking themselves questions about the story, making predictions, imagining what they would do in the character's situation. All of these strategies encourage readers to engage with the text. This is what makes reading fun.
Writing Advance Tutoring
Over the past 8 years, I have encouraged students to observe one very important reality: good writers are made. It doesn't matter if you never liked writing or find it somewhat difficult to understand. Writing is a skill that CAN be taught. Applying the proper techniques can propel a student writer to higher levels of achievement while building their confidence in their abilities.
Homework Coach Tutoring
I think I would be a great homework coach for middle students who need additional help in reading, writing, and literature. Currently, I teach high school English and there are times when I need to create lessons to help students review material they might have missed from previous years. As my state assessments show, I am very good at building student knowledge to cover any gaps students might have experienced. I know I can apply this experience to helping middle school students in these areas.
Spanish Tutoring
I studied Spanish in both high school and college. It is my favorite language. My desire to become fluent in the language has encouraged me to continue my study of Spanish. I have a very strong level of vocabulary and the ability to explain the different tenses to students in both middle school and in a high school Spanish I class. I have also taught Spanish lessons to my students. I frequently converse with those who are native Spanish speakers to keep me on my toes.
Social Studies Tutoring
Social Studies is an interesting topic that provides students with insight into the people, cultures, and history of foreign lands. In college, I studied American History, World Civilizations, and Geography all of which I believe would assist me as a Social Studies tutor.
ACT English Tutoring
Each year, I work very diligently to help students prepare for the English portion of the ACT. I have taught this subject for the last 8 years and obtained my highest scores on the ACT in the English section. The content knowledge test for my teacher license also demonstrates my strong ability to teach English Language Arts.
ACT Reading Tutoring
My work as an undergraduate and graduate student has helped me build strong reading skills over the years. I have been able to help students employ some of the same techniques to help them become better, more critical readers and thinkers.
ESL/ESOL Tutoring
I obtained my TEFL certificate to teach English to ESL students from different countries. My experience also includes working as an online ESL teacher for almost a year.
English Tutoring
As a licensed educator, I have enjoyed teaching English to high school students for the past 8 years. It was always my favorite subject from elementary school through college.
Literature Tutoring
Reading has always been a joyful activity for me. In fact, the best part about studying for my content knowledge test (for teacher licensing) was rereading all of the wonderful novels I had enjoyed since middle school. There is nothing like a great story. When I read, I become totally immersed in the novel as if I am an unspoken character in the story. My imaginative mind transports me to those exotic settings like the one experienced by Ralph, Jack, and Piggy in "Lord of the Flies." I'm on the edge of my seat every moment during the rising action. By the time the story reaches the climax, I am astonished and amazed because in my mind I have just watched all of this unfold right before my eyes. There have been times when I had to make myself stop reading an enjoyable novel because I wanted to spend at least 3 days with the characters before saying goodbye. Sometimes I go back and revisit the novels which fascinated me. I'm always surprised at how much more I learn about the characters, plot, or historical time frame upon a second or third reading.
Study Skills Tutoring
As an English teacher, I often demonstrate to students effective study skills. Students sometimes think studying means looking over their notes the night before the big exam. This could not be further from the truth. To retain the information, I encourage students to ask themselves questions, reread parts of the text, paraphrase and summarize the material as well.
Writing Tutoring
It is often considered one of the most challenging things to teach; however, helping a student discover their writing potential is one of the things I love most about being a teacher. The same way you have to follow a recipe to get the desired end-result, writing consists of basic techniques and strategies that students must practice with if they truly wish to become better writers.
