Fun Facts

I have lived in DC all of my life except when I attended delaware-state-university">Delaware State University for two years. My favorite singer is Stevie Wonder and I saw him in concert. I felt like that was one of the best days in my life. My hobbies are listening to music and reading books. I have traveled to most of the states on the East coast as well as taken a cruise to the Bahamas and Puerto Rico. I think of life as a big puzzle and I try to find a new piece each day!

About Me

I am an outgoing person and enjoy learning new things. I am a mother of two and really enjoy spending time with them. I am currently in my last year at Trinity University and will graduate in May 2013. I am completing my Masters in Counseling with a concentration in Mental Health. Once I graduate I plan on working in an agency that focuses on families in poverty and eventually will pursue opening my own practice.

My washington-dc">tutoring experiences have varied from working in the classroom with students in grades K-6th as a teacher's aide over a 5 year time span. In addition to being a teacher's aide I also was a classroom teacher for approximately two years at a local boys and girls club in washington-dc">Washington DC. Most of the students I worked with were below grade level and I worked with them to achieve their current grade level scores at that time in reading and math.

My approach to washington-dc">tutoring and mentoring is first it is very important to be genuine with each child. Also making learning fun and exciting while incorporating the skills they need to excel. I am a firm believer that children learn through play and because of that I think when working with younger children play should be incorporated into the lesson with games or non-monetary incentives. Also taking breaks in between lessons to allow the child to not only process the information but also as to not overwhelm them. I think as a mentor one should actively listen to the child and show them that you care about what they have to show. Be a positive and encouraging role model and this can be done by telling the child they can do it or they will do better the next time if they are experiencing a hard time with a particular problem. Last as a mentor it is imperative to be professional and respectful to both the parents and child at all times.
