Fun Facts

While many students study abroad during their college years, I had the opportunity to study for a year when I was in fifth grade in my native country of Peru. My parents wanted my Spanish skills to improve but also yearned to introduce to me the rich culture. I took my experiences to heart and became heavily involved In different clubs. In high school, I joined the Air Force Junior R.O.T.C. which stressed motivation, discipline, and leadership skills to help one exceed in school and beyond.

About Me

I am a sophomore Medical Technology major and Spanish minor at St. Joseph's College in Patchogue. My goal after completing my degree is to go on to medical school to become a neurologist. From a very young age, I have always enjoyed helping others and pursing a career in medicine is one of the many forms in which I believe I can make a difference in an individual's life. My ultimate goal is to join Doctors Without Borders and contribute my services in third world countries.

Experience

As part of the National Honor Society, I had the opportunity to tutor students ranging from sixth to twelfth grade weekly in all subjects, more specifically in science, Spanish, and math. Being part of a diverse community, I also tutored students and sometimes parents who were learning English as a second language. Currently, I am serving as a mentor and tutor to a student in seventh grade, teaching her about the college experience because it's never too early to start thinking the future.

Approach

Growing up, my parents instilled in me a love for the academics and the benefits of an education. I remembered my father saying that while exercising was essential for your body, the knowledge gained from reading was essential for your mind. While I firmly believe in this, I also know that each student is unique; some may be auditory learners, while others are visual learners. I strive to create a tutoring plan geared towards assessing the student's strengths to help them grasp the material.

Homework Coach Tutoring

As a homework coach, my mission is to help the student's overall academic success as opposed to providing remedial instruction on how to accomplish the work. I work to inspire the student to complete assignments by tackling the issue one step at a time, by learning to plan assignments, and by managing his/her time effectively.

Spanish Tutoring

I have taken advanced Spanish classes beginning in seventh grade and have received high scores in both Spanish regents examinations and AP courses. I tutored students in middle school throughout my high school years in Spanish and helped to improve conversational and grammar skills.

Study Skills Tutoring

It can be hard to balance extracurricular activities and school work, but I am here to motivate and guide the student to organize him or herself and create better study skills. Such skills can be accomplished by properly managing your time and learning new techniques on how to grasp the material that the student may be struggling with.

Spanish III Tutoring

In my junior and senior year of high school, I took AP Spanish Language and Spanish Literature courses with the highest possible grade at the end of each year. As part of the Spanish Honor Society, I served as a tutor to students from ninth and twelfth grades. Writing Tutoring
