Fun Facts

For seven years, I have been saving lives by teaching children and adults alike how to swim. I started this passion when I volunteered as a coach for the Special Olympics swim team of Broward county. Ever since, I have not only been teaching swim lessons, but also organizing swimming fundraisers for non-profit organizations such as MSAA, Doctors Without Borders, and Ronald McDonald House Charities. I also play several instruments: vocals, piano, guitar, and ukulele!

About Me

I am a junior Recreational Therapy student at FIU, but I recently transferred from FGCU with an A.A. in Music Performance. During my time in college, I have never earned a GPA lower than a 3.7, and I have made Dean's List two semesters in a row. Once I have completed my degree, I plan on, as a recreational therapist, using music therapy methods to enrich and heal the lives of my future patients. I also plan on continuing to teach swim lessons and starting a family.

Experience

I have been a swim teacher for seven years. If you can teach a child that is terrified of the water how to jump in, roll over, and float on his or her back without a single hint of fear, you can teach anyone anything! All jokes aside, my years of experience teaching one of the most difficult sports has given me the necessary skills to teach in other areas. As a music student, I helped lower classmen better understand music theory and aural skills, as well as helped them in writing essays.

Approach

As an instructor, I see the insurmountable potential in each person I teach. I always give clear, concise instructions so the student knows what to do and how to do it. I push my students, but I do so in a way that matches their pace. As a swim instructor, I have been told I am gentle, sweet, trust-inducing, and creative. I am also encouraging when a student feels discouraged, and I celebrate every success. Also, I will not move on until the student is 100% confident with the material.

Arts Tutoring

Art classes not associated with my major:
- Art Appreciation (high school) (A)
- Drama I and Drama IV (high school) (A)
- Music Appreciation (high school) (A)
- Chorus for four semesters (high school) (A)
- Understanding Visual and Performing Arts (A)

I transferred from FGCU with an A.A. in Music Performance. As an artist myself, I would be more than able to exceptionally teach in areas of the arts. What's more, for my university's Understand Visual and Performing Arts course (a Humanities credit), I have participated in multiple productions that served as approved performances that were to be observed and to be used as a reference in the students' papers.

Music Theory Tutoring

- Music Theory I (A)
- Music Theory II (B)
- Music Theory III (incomplete due to medical issues)

I transferred from FGCU with an A.A. in Music Performance. As an artist myself, I would be more than able to exceptionally teach music theory. At first, music theory was a challenging subject to me. However, I quickly found strategies and tricks t teach myself the material. Now, I understand music theory from not only a studious perspective, but also from a musical perspective. What's more, I helped lower classmen better understand music theory and aural skills. I was constantly approached with questions in between classes, and my fellow colleagues believed my explanations to be comprehensive and clarifying.

Spanish I Tutoring

- Spanish I-III (high school) (All A's)
- AICE Spanish for college credit (A, 5/5 on exam)

My entire family is of Puerto Rican descent, so in my house, there was no escaping learning how to speak fluent Spanish! Not only did I grow up reading, writing, and speaking the language, but I also assist Spanish-only students and customers on a daily basis. Having passed Spanish classes all through high school (as well as the AICE Spanish course for college language credits, on which I scored a 5/5), I am proficient in the rules of the language and can easily assist a non-Spanish speaker.

Writing Tutoring

Classes Taken:
- Journalism I (high school)
- Advanced Journalism (high school)
- All Honors English courses (high school)
- Composition I & II
- Creative Writing

I have always held a high proficiency in writing and proofreading. At my current job, my manager has me proofread all emails and business-related posters before she sends them off or prints them. I have also been trusted by my fellow colleagues to proofread their papers before submission.

English Tutoring

- Honors English I-IV (high school) (Received either A's or B+'s)
- Composition I (B) and II (A)

Although the English language is confusing to most, I have an advanced understanding of English literature, writing, and grammar. I have always received high marks in my English classes not only because of how easy the subject is to me, but also because I enjoy it. I would have no problem with explaining the English subject to those who are unfamiliar or struggling with it.

Homework Coach Tutoring

In addition to working as a swim instructor at my current occupation, I am also a receptionist and call center specialist. Such jobs, during calmer times, have allowed me to assist children with their homework assignments while their siblings swim. Such was also the case during the couple of times I have babysat my parents' friends' children. While I have never officially been a "homework coach," I have had plenty of opportunities to help children and preteens with their assignments.

Psychology Tutoring

- General Psychology (B+)
- Principles of Development (A)
- Abnormal Psychology (currently taking)

As a music therapist, studying various subtopics in psychology is necessary to effectively treat patients. Social sciences such as psychology have always fascinated me, and I have a knack for mastering the course material. What's more, I have worked with children and adults alike with special needs, and I have friends who suffer from mental illnesses. Not only do I have knowledge on the subject from my classes, but I also have tactical knowledge that I've gained from working with those who are mentally ill. Such well-rounded knowledge would most definitely make me a great candidate to teach psychology to others.

Reading Comprehension Tutoring

- Honors English I-IV (high school) (Received either A's or B+'s)
- Composition I (B) and II (A)

Although the English language is confusing to most, I have an advanced understanding of reading, literature, writing, and grammar. I have always received high marks in my English and Reading Comprehension classes not only because of how easy the subject is to me, but also because I enjoy it. I would have no problem with teaching Reading Comprehension to those who are unfamiliar or struggling with it.

Spanish II Tutoring

Spanish III Tutoring

SAT Verbal/Writing Tutoring

Classes Taken:
- Journalism I (high school)
- Advanced Journalism (high school)
- All Honors English courses (high school)
- Composition I & II
- Creative Writing

I have always held a high proficiency in writing and proofreading. At my current job, my manager has me proofread all emails and business-related posters before she sends them off or prints them. I have also been trusted by my fellow colleagues to proofread their papers before submission. Also, I have been complimented many times by others for my ability to speak with eloquence (particularly during job interviews), so such verbal skills will allow me to teach others how to do well in SAT verbal/writing exams. In addition, I received high marks in my writing and verbal assessments for AICE Spanish in high school. Although such marks were received for a different language, there is no doubt that I'd be able to have my future students wield the same results in the English language.

General Music Tutoring

Since my A.A. is in Music Performance/Music Therapy, a list of classes for general music would be too long. Please refer to my college transcripts for a comprehensive list of all music classes I've taken.

Music is, without a doubt, my passion. Ever since I began to study the subject in my junior year of high school, I have always received high marks and high praises from professors and colleagues alike for my adept knowledge and mastery of this beautiful art form. I have a comprehensive knowledge in anything from music theory to stage presence, diction to aural skills. I have also been sought out by younger colleagues and other musicians not attending college for clarification on musical subjects, different vocal techniques, and general knowledge of music. My passion for music as well as teaching others would make an excellent combination to tutor future musicians.

Voice (Music) Tutoring

Although I did not take voice lessons until my first year of college, the head of vocal studies at FGCU herself has told me plenty of times just how much I've grown as a vocalist and just how much potential I have to continue to grow into an exceptional musician. My voice teacher, Carolann Sanita-Vandermeer, has given me the knowledge and vocal techniques to become the best vocalist possible, and I have no doubt that I would be able to teach other students the same thing.

Macintosh Tutoring

- Computer Programming (high school) (A)
- Computer Data Analysis (currently taking)

I have been a Mac user for four years now, so I have developed a proficiency when it comes to operating Apple machinery. Many of my friends have trouble using Macs, especially when their schools only have Apple technology equipped, so I have spent a fair amount of time teaching others how to operate a Mac. My computer classes as well as using my own music editing software have only increased my knowledge of Apple technology.
