Fun Facts
Weekends (mostly Saturdays) are my favorite quick vacation days. Car shows, Arts festivals, craft fairs are a good way to see how diverse people can be. I am the daughter of a teacher and law enforcement officer. I love being a Texan and I am somewhat of a Science Fiction geek....Star Trek, Dr. Who, X-Men, etc.
About Me
I am a teacher in the Crowley Independent School District as a Dyslexia Therapist and was a teacher in Fort Worth Independent School District for fourteen years. The hours (years) of training and teaching have proved to be invaluable. I am ESL (English as a Second Language) certified. Despite the name of the certificate, the strategies used are also GREAT for struggling learners.
Experience
I am an educator with 20 years of experience with early childhood students (kindergarten - second grade). I am very passionate about establishing an educational foundation for young learners. I am aware of the daily demands put on the classroom teacher and how that can limit the individual attention students may need. I am confident that tutoring can help close the academic gaps a student may be experiencing. I look forward to working with you and your child.
Approach
I have mainly been working with grades K-2, and I have tutoring experience in the subjects of reading and writing with students up to sixth grade. I like using multiple strategies to help students become better learners. I believe that each student has their own individual personality and that allows me to tailor lessons to their needs. I feel that part of teaching is facilitating learning not just giving a student information to repeat back to me.

English Tutoring
For younger children language arts lessons focus on basic reading, writing and communication skills. Periods of silent sustained reading, thematic writing and properly using new vocabulary are all major focal points for this age group. I use multiple strategies such as pictures that relate to each other, list, and thinking webs to keep students focused on a topic.
Homework Coach Tutoring
While helping with homework, my goal is to help students to understand the content of their assignments and to become more cognizant of their own individual learning styles. As your child's homework coach, I will help them organize their time and materials, complete daily and long-term assignments, and use different strategies for learning content material for quizzes and test. Homework is a great way for students to understand that learning does not stop once they leave their school for the day.
Elementary Math Tutoring
Math lessons for elementary students must start with concrete objects (something they can touch). Once the concept is understood, you can move them on to more abstract strategies (pencil and paper only). The act of students explaining their process will also help them to learn how to do a certain problem
Reading Comprehension Tutoring
I have been teaching the fundamentals of reading for fourteen years. Along with actual classroom experience, I also attend continuing education workshops that allow me to stay up to date on new research on how children learn. I also understand that there are many steps that a student must learn which leads to effective reading comprehension.
