Fun Facts

I live in the mountains of Colorado in a town called Nederland. My passion is growing Lion's Mane mushrooms. They are delicious and are used as a substitute for chicken or fish in many dishes. As an additional benefit, they are supposed to help improve the health of your brain! I eat them myself and give them to friends. This makes me very popular at the local coffee house!

About Me

I am 59 years old and have had 3 major careers. Now I run a consulting business for homeowners who want to rent their houses out to travelers when they are away on vacation themselves.

Experience

My 3rd career was as a high school math teacher in an alternative program. Many of my students struggled with math skills but I have a way of explaining things that helped them learn to speak the language of logic - Algebra. Most of the focus was on getting students past the End-of-Instruction exam.

Approach

I was good at math as a child and have used it extensively in my life. Most of the struggles students seem to have to seem to be related to the way math is taught and the examples provided. Many don't make sense to students so I try to understand what interest excites the mind. Then I focus on using examples around that interest so math becomes relevant. Algebra is in everything and connecting the lesson to a concrete example that the student can relate to is critical.
