About Me
I am a graduate of houston">The houston">University of Houston - Clear Lake and Walden University. I received my Bachelor of Science in Education with a minor in Reading and English and my Masters of Science in Educational Technology.
Experience
I have worked in the public school environment since 1996; teaching fourth and fifth grade before migrating into the school library setting. I have 10 years experience in the school library with 8 years being in a 6-8 grade library. I have informally tutored students during the school day in core subjects and informally tutored neighborhood students while engaging in conversation.
Approach
I am a proponent of education, believing it to be absolutely necessary for an improved quality of life, and I try to impart this appreciation to all of my students.
English Tutoring
I am a former middle school librarian. I believe that in order to instill a love of reading to students the tutor must also be a reader. I pride myself on getting to know my students so that I can find the right material to encourage further reading.
Homework Coach Tutoring
I have tutored students in and out of the school setting in the area of homework. I focus on study skills and time management necessary to complete homework as well as the concepts themselves.
Math Tutoring
I have tutored math in the school setting as well as in the private tutoring setting. I believe that students who are struggling in math need the extra practice to be successful and those that excel in math need to be challenged to use their brain in creative ways.
Middle School Math Tutoring
Middle School math is challenging to some students; sometimes because they lack the foundation of the basic concepts. I like to introduce the concepts that are weak with interactive games that don't feel like learning.
Study Skills Tutoring
In the aspect of study skills, time management is an important component and therefore both of these are taught together with me. Study skills enable a student to feel successful in areas that are challenging when they have the right tools to help them.
Elementary Math Tutoring
Elementary Math begins with confidence in the basic facts. I like to introduce these with fun, interactive games that don't feel like learning.
Reading Comprehension Tutoring
I taught reading in the school setting for 6 years and believe that putting the right book in the hands of a reader is a key step to the love of learning.
Social Studies Tutoring
Social Studies is a concept that works best with study skills because it is a subject where you should teach how to find information that is pertinent rather than memorization facts.
Writing Tutoring
I have taught writing for a number of years as well as been a reader for state tests. Writing is an important part of the learning process and like to start with fun, interactive ways to introduce the different types.
Microsoft PowerPoint Tutoring
Power point has been used to design projects from book reports to book trailers. Creativity is maximized when students are allowed to present projects in this way.
Microsoft Publisher Tutoring
Publisher is a great way for students to design flyers and such for projects and reports. It allows the students' creativity to show through.
Microsoft Word Tutoring
Microsoft word is a great program to teach students how to manipulate text and such in a manner that is easy to learn and use. Its use in projects is limited but its use in writing is amazing if used correctly and creatively.
