Fun Facts
I have been doing martial arts for approximately 9 years now and recently got my first degree black belt. During this time I have trained in Shotokan Karate, Japanese Ju-Jitsu, and Japanese Kobudo (weapons training). I consider my experience in martial arts to be one of the biggest aspects of my identity. Additionally I have been playing piano for ten years, but am now on a break. My favorite
About Me
I am currently a freshman at the washington">University of Washington with Sophomore standing pursuing a degree in science/washington/vancouver">Computer Science. However, I will be transferring to the portland">University of Portland in the fall to do continue my education closer to home. Despite never having any prior experience in programming before attending UW, I fell in love with it and am now certain that it is what I wish to pursue in life.
Experience
On an academic level, I have been helping my friends with their studies from high school until now. Particularly, I tutored a number of my friends in CS. Additionally, I feel that my education has greatly increased my abilities particularly with completing the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. I have also been teaching martial arts as an assistant to my instructor and as a result have approximately 6-7 years of experience teaching 6 year olds to 30 year olds.
Approach
My approach focuses heavily on making the student learn for themselves, rather than me simply helping them or giving the answer to them if they get stuck. Particularly, I ask questions for the student to reflect on and to therefore derive the answer from their own knowledge, rather than an external source; I feel this is critical because it allows the student to comprehend the material by thinking about in a new way, which is the "nudge" that I provide.
