About Me

I am a junior at maryland/columbia">columbia">maryland/columbia">columbia-university">maryland/columbia">columbia">maryland/columbia">Columbia University majoring in Creative Writing with a concentration in Poetry. I am also hoping to pursue a Business Management concentration. Before coming to maryland/columbia">columbia">maryland/columbia">Columbia, I graduated from The Westminster School second in my class. Since being at maryland/columbia">columbia">maryland/columbia">Columbia, I have been on the Dean's List every semester. I eventually hope to pursue an MFA in Creative Writing or an MBA.

Experience

As a volunteer for Let's Get Ready SAT prep, I taught weekly 3-hour classes in Mathematics and general college prep. This opportunity taught me to assess students' needs, plan ahead, and create effective and engaging lessons. In high school, I taught dance to age groups 3-4, 7-9, and 10-12. I have enjoyed teaching a diverse array of subjects to a diverse range of ages and look forward to continuing to do so with Frog Tutoring!

Approach

I have always been a questions-asker, and I think this is reflected in my approach to tutoring. Instead of lecturing, I try to ask questions that will help the student reframe the material and guide him or her to arrive at the answer independently. Additionally, I welcome all questions from the student. I know the importance of feeling comfortable, motivated, and engaged and try to create a dynamic accordingly.

Spanish I Tutoring

I am conversational in Spanish. I scored a 5 on both the AP Spanish Language and AP Spanish Literature tests and a 760 on the Spanish SAT Subject test. Last summer, I volunteered as a translator for a mobile medical clinic where I had to communicate between patients and nurses. At Columbia, I got an A in my class on Latin America in Revolt, in which we spoke exclusively Spanish.

Spanish II Tutoring

I am conversational in Spanish. I scored a 5 on both the AP Spanish Language and AP Spanish Literature tests and a 760 on the Spanish SAT Subject test. Last summer, I volunteered as a translator for a mobile medical clinic where I had to communicate between patients and nurses. English Tutoring

I am a Creative Writing major at Columbia, which means that a third of my classes for my major will end up being taken in the English/Comparative Literature Department. I scored in the 98th percentile on my Critical Reading SAT. On campus, I am an active member of a literary society, and spend a great deal of time reading.

SAT Math Tutoring

I taught SAT Prep Math at a New York City high school for a semester, teaching weekly 3-hour classes. This means I am not only familiar with the SAT Math test from a student's side, but also from a teacher's side -- I am comfortable with the different types of questions and how best to approach them. On my own SAT Math test, I scored in the 97th percentile. I have also taken up to Calculus III at Columbia.

SAT Verbal/Writing Tutoring

As a Creative Writing major, I spend a great deal of time not only thinking but also talking about what makes good writing. My major consists of developing facility with the English language, and with writing to an indicated audience. I scored in the 99th percentile on my own SAT Writing test.

Study Skills Tutoring

Having attended boarding school and then a rigorous university, I have had to develop and maintain effective study skills. Especially as a naturally extroverted and energetic person, I understand the importance of devising a study regimen that is both engaging and productive. I also taught college prep for Let's Get Ready SAT coaching, which included study skills and test-taking strategies.

Writing Tutoring

As a Creative Writing major, I am not only knowledgeable about writing, but also have a great passion for it. Being a Creative Writing major means I take Workshop classes almost every semester. These classes require me to read others work and learn how to constructively criticize it in order to make it most effective.

Algebra Tutoring

Teachers aren't lying when they say algebra sticks with you. Having taken up to Calculus III at Columbia, I have had to keep my basic algebra skills sharp. I have experience teaching math with Let's Get Ready SAT prep and am comfortable with middle school level algebra. Additionally, I find math to be really fun and am confident in my ability to make it fun for students.

Reading Comprehension Tutoring

In addition to scoring in the 98th percentile on my Reading SAT, I am confident in my ability to talk about a given excerpt and to think critically about it. At least half of being a Writing major is about reading skills.

Spanish Tutoring

I am conversational in Spanish. I scored a 5 on both the AP Spanish Language and AP Spanish Literature tests and a 760 on the Spanish SAT Subject test. Last summer, I volunteered as a translator for a mobile medical clinic where I had to communicate between patients and nurses. At Columbia, I got an A in my class on Latin America in Revolt, in which we spoke exclusively Spanish.

Math Tutoring

I am comfortable with elementary level Math, and have a deep appreciation for how important it is in setting a foundation for Math classes to come. I am also comfortable with this age group from teaching dance classes and dance camps to elementary school students.

Social Studies Tutoring

I think elementary level Social Studies can be really exciting and know a lot of people for whom a love of history began in elementary school Social Studies. I am confident in my ability to make the material new and exciting. I also have good memorization techniques, since this subject can tend to require memorization.

PSAT Tutoring

I was a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist based on my PSAT scores. I have also taught SAT prep before, which includes test taking strategies important for the PSAT.

SSAT Tutoring

I have a deep appreciation for the importance of SSAT's, since I owe so much of my success to a high school which would not have allowed me in without high SSAT scores. I am knowledgeable about test taking strategies and comfortable with the material on the SSAT's.
