Fun Facts
When not teaching or tutoring you can find me hiking for miles on weekends and traveling. I went to northern England last summer to give a paper at a conference and this summer will find me white water rafting down the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon.
About Me
I'm a university adjunct professor of Composition and English, but I have also taught high school English for almost ten years. My student teaching was in high school and elementary school English and ESL. I have a B.A. (Williams College) M.A. (Middlebury College), and Ph.D. (University of North Texas) in English but I keep an approachable and friendly style! My students often comment on this approachability and their comfort level in working with me.
Experience
I've tutored students from elementary through high school in Writing and Literature. I've volunteered for Kids' Hope tutoring elementary students in a variety of subjects. Currently I teach at Texas Wesleyan University and have tutored students in Writing and Literature during my office hours. I also have SAT prep experience. Due to my diverse background of living in Brazil and Austria, I can tutor students in Portuguese and German as well as Music Theory.
Approach
Of all the teaching I've done, one-on-one tutoring is my favorite! I learn about my students' interests and incorporate them in our tutoring. I encourage my students to use the resources they possess and coach them in gaining more skills. Critical thinking is priceless, so I build up my students' thinking which they can transfer to all study fields.

PhdEducation Tutoring
I possess an M.S. in Education and student taught at both elementary and high school levels in Engilsh and ESL. In addition I taught almost 10 years at the high school level and have taught six years at the college level.
German Tutoring
In addition to a German minor in undergraduate school, I received a Fulbright teaching assistantship in Salzburg, Austria after undergraduate graduation. I lived in Salzburg for a year and became fluent in German. I have kept up my proficienty.
Literature Tutoring
My Master's in English is in Literature as is my Ph.D. While my concentration is in American Literature I have taught American, British, and World Literature to both high school and college students. I have also tutored students in these subjects.
Portuguese Tutoring
I have lived in Brazil three times beginning with a three-year stay in Sao Paulo when I was nine years old. I taught at an international school in Sao Paulo. Most recently, I performed research under a Fulbright grant in Brazil in 2013 for my dissertation on an American poet (Elizabeth Bishop) who lived in Brazil herself for 20 years. I brushed up and studied Portuguese at the university level during this time.
Reading Comprehension Tutoring
During the course of a B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. in English I have tutored students from the elementary through college level in reading comprehension and have also tutored students on SAT reading comprehension.
Study Skills Tutoring
In working with students from elementary school through college, I consistently coach them on making the most of their study time and learning how to give full concentration in limited doses. I work with my high school and college students in test study strategies and ways of retaining information.
Writing Tutoring
As a current college professor, I teach many sections of Freshman Composition which employs many styles of writing from the personal narrative, to rhetorical studies, to argumentative papers. These different genres can be applied to younger students as well. I often tutor my students during office hours so they understand the genre at hand and the writing conventions it involves.
