Fun Facts
I have been actively engaged with gaming stores since college. Board games, tabletop RPGs, card games - to this day I still make time once a week to head down to my local game store and either participate or organize open play events. I used to play cello when I was in high school, although I haven't picked it up seriously until a few months ago (learning the Game of Thrones theme now). I've discovered that most animals, even animals that don't like strangers, tend to like me.
About Me
I am a PhD candidate in bioengineering at the chicago">University of Illinois at Chicago. My dissertation work on cerebral blood flow has won awards at the University for both its scientific merit and the D visualizations I have created to showcase my work. During my assignment as a teaching assistant I won the Outstanding Teaching award in my department. My goal is to become a science outreach coordinator to combine my passion for teaching and program management.
Experience
Both as a teaching assistant and a graduate studies mentor, I have continually mentored students one-on-one for the past six years. During that time, I also volunteered every summer with a REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) and RET (Research Experience for Teachers) site here at the University of Illinois. Working with high school students excited about research as well as Chicago public school teachers expanded my view on what it takes to mentor and nourish a students success.
Approach
As a teaching assistant at UIC, I have worked with students with varying degrees of proficiency. Some are seeking to master the finest detail to ace their exams, some are struggling with the basic content of the course and are debating even asking for help. My own experience in education from high school to graduate studies reminds me that education starts with assessing where a student begins and identifying what their obstacles are. All students have the capacity to learn and grow.

Homework Coach Tutoring
Setting aside a set time every day to finish assignments is critical. My experience has taught me that this has to take place in and outside the home - teacher office hours and working with other students can be more critical then time spent alone. When a student can teach their peers in a subject, their own obstacles fall away.

As an engineer, MATLAB is a critical tool for quickly parsing data, images and running simple algorithms. I have used and taught MATLAB syntax, coding and visualization for over 5 years to high schoolers, undergraduate students and even high school teachers. Any student who is considering engineering would be well-served to learn MATLAB as a useful tool as soon as possible.
