Fun Facts
I love dogs, traveling, reading, and gardening. My four dogs all started off as pound pups. I have visited Canada, Mexico, Ireland, and the United Kingdom. I would like to visit New Zealand, Australia, or Norway next. Reading is another way of traveling and experiencing new things. I grew up on a farm in North Dakota, and we had a huge garden. As a kid, I
always swore I'd never have a garden. Now gardening gives me hours of pleasure.
About Me
I graduated from Minnesota State University at Moorhead in 1993 with a Bachelor's of Science in English Education and an emphasis in technical writing. My university had a program which allowed students to student teach in the Rio Grande Valley. After student teaching, I taught in McAllen for five years before moving to Fort Worth. For the past 18 years, I have taught at McLean 6th Grade Center. I am taking a year off to pursue other interests.
Experience
I hold the following certifications in Texas: Reading, English, Language Arts, ESL, and Social Studies composite. Most of my teaching experience is.social studies and reading. I have participated in several writing workshops. I have a great deal of experience in helping students be successful in history fair and other projects.
Approach
My approach varies with the students needs, interests, and subject matter. For example, with an ESL student in need of reading help, my emphasis would be on finding high interest fiction and non-fiction materials and teaching strategies to increase understanding. I would include a systematic vocabulary study that addresses academic vocabulary, context clues, and affix meaning. Steck-Vaughn publishes some excellent materials. In Texas, including STAAR prep would be important.

As former teacher whose main experience is with sixth grade reading and social studies, I am well acquainted with test prep for STAAR and have a great deal of training regarding teaching test-taking skills. Sixth grade is the cusp between elementary and middle school. Thus, I have some insight into both the elementary and middle school Mind.
Moreover, I have a genuine love of the humanities. As a English Major who once aspired to be an author, I am able to convey my love of the written word and have writer-workshop experience. On the strength of my application essays, I was selected to participate in two National Endowment for the Humanities Seminars. The latter one allowed me to study the Industrial Revolution in England for five weeks. During this time I became acquainted with economic theory ranging from Adam Smith's "Wealth of Nations" to Eric Hobsbawn's "Industry and Empire."
As a social studies teacher, I was particularly devoted to helping honors students with limited research experience be successful at History Fair.
