Fun Facts

In my free time, I am an aerial silks artist -the person at the circus that is hanging from 30 foot silk ribbons in the ceiling, though I'm not nearly that good. I started last year and now I'm thoroughly hooked! There's something about hitting a new shape or soaring through the air that is extremely rewarding and freeing. I love challenging my body so, along with the silks, I also love doing yoga, ballroom dancing, and kickboxing.

About Me

I am a Dean's List student at maryland/columbia">columbia">maryland/columbia">columbia-university">maryland/columbia">columbia">maryland/columbia">Columbia University, class of 2017, studying biomedical engineering. I went to high school in Cedar Falls, Iowa, where I had a 4.0 unweighted GPA. I am a senior Peer Health educator and a US Liaison Ambassador for China Youth Urban Robotics Alliance, CUYRA. CUYRA is a nonprofit organization that I helped establish that aids in bringing FIRST robotics experience to Chinese high school students.

Experience

Most of my teaching experience comes from teaching robotics. As a former team leader of a globally ranked FIRST robotics team, I was expected to teach and train the new members. After graduating mentored FIRST Lego League. Additionally I help organize, run, and teach at an annual robotics workshop in China for CUYRA. Outside of robotics, I teach weekly workshops in New York City high schools about health for Peer Health Exchange.

Approach

Growing up in a very small town, I was never really challenged academically. My school just not set up to give me intellectually satisfying courses. By high school, I was able to work with educators to craft an accelerated path for myself and high achieving student to come. I was acutely aware of how the American school system is built for the 'average' student, and not for EVERY student. I'm here to to give students one on one attention and craft workshops to match their intellectual curiosity.

Algebra Tutoring

I had an unweighted 4.0 GPA in high school but, as an engineer and scientist, I use many of these principles in day to day research and development! I have since taken up through Calculus IV and Applied Math at Columbia University.

AP Chemistry Tutoring

I had an unweighted 4.0 GPA in high school but, as an engineer and scientist, I use many of these principles in day to day research and development! I work with both living organisms and bio-mimetic bio materials, who's properties are governed by the rules of chemistry. I've since taken intensive chemistry lecture and lab, and organic chemistry lecture and lab at Columbia University.

AP Physics Tutoring

I had an unweighted 4.0 GPA in high school but, as an engineer and scientist, I use many of these principles in day to day research and development! When I design new Biomedical imaging techniques, I have to keep in mind things such as mass and cantilever, optics, heat and rotation. I've since taken physics courses in mechanics, electricity/magnetism, and optics/relativity at Columbia University.

Biology Tutoring

I had an unweighted 4.0 GPA in high school but, as an engineer and scientist, I use many of these principles in day to day research and development! Because I work in biomedical imaging, I have to understand everything from the individual neurons we image to how drugs will affect the entire organism. I've also taken a year of biology, quantitative physiology, and biomedical engineering at Columbia University.

English Tutoring

I had an unweighted 4.0 GPA in high school, including advanced English classes. Although many do not think of scientists and engineers as writers, being able to clearly and concisely convey ideas is always important. I have also taken University Writing at Columbia.

Math Tutoring

I had an unweighted 4.0 GPA in high school but, as an engineer and scientist, I use many of these principles in day to day research and development! I have since taken up through Calculus IV and Applied Math at Columbia University.

Math Advance Tutoring

I had an unweighted 4.0 GPA in high school but, as an engineer and scientist, I use many of these principles in day to day research and development! I have since taken up through Calculus IV and Applied Math at Columbia University.

Music Theory Tutoring

Though I never formally took music theory classes in high school, I had incredible piano and violin instructors who made sure I understood cadences and counterpoint. I declared a music theory minor in college and tested out of Fundamentals in Music Theory (the equivalent of high school music theory), and have take Music Theory I.

Physics Tutoring

I had an unweighted 4.0 GPA in high school but, as an engineer and scientist, I use many of these principles in day to day research and development! Pre Algebra Tutoring

I had an unweighted 4.0 GPA in high school but, as an engineer and scientist, I use many of these principles in day to day research and development! I have since taken up through Calculus IV and Applied Math at Columbia University.

Pre Calculus Tutoring

I had an unweighted 4.0 GPA in high school but, as an engineer and scientist, I use many of these principles in day to day research and development! I have since taken up through Calculus IV and Applied Math at Columbia University.

Science Tutoring

I had an unweighted 4.0 GPA in high school but, as an engineer and scientist, I use many of these principles in day to day research and development! Because I work in biomedical engineering, I have to understand and apply very broad topics in science. For example I need to understand the air flow needed to levitate a ball for a fly to walk on (physics), how the fly will behave if I give it the sent of food (biology), and what materials I can use that are non-toxic to flies (chemistry).

Piano Tutoring

I have played piano since I was 6. I have competed nationally, but enjoy just mastering a piece for the sake of making music. My favorite piece is Chopin's Impromptu in C# minor.

Violin Tutoring

Though I didn't start violin until I was 8, I had built a solid understanding of music and emotion from piano. By the time I was in high school, I was concert master of the Northern Iowa Youth Orchestra and a 3 year all state violinist (I graduated high school in 3 years).
