Fun Facts

I love being outdoors! Whether it is playing ultimate frisbee with the Tulane Women's Ultimate Team, hiking, swimming at the beach or reading in Audubon Park, I love being outside. I always think that a sunny day and a nice cool breeze truly brings out the best in people.

About Me

I am a rising senior at Tulane University majoring in English, Italian, and Social Policy & Practice. I am also starting the Tulane 4+1 English MA program next semester. I love language, which is why I love studying English and Italian; I have greatly enjoyed the challenge of thinking critically about social issues, politics and government that comes with Social Policy & Practice. I hope to combine these interests as I plan to pursue a career in program development in the nonprofit sector.

Experience

Since high school I have worked with children in many settings. As a Hebrew school Teacher's Assistant, I helped students learning to read Hebrew by teaching them study techniques and practicing with them. I was also a Gymnastics Instructor for 5 years, teaching students basic gymnastics while also teaching communication and team-building skills, and instilling confidence. I volunteered as a Reading Tutor in local elementary schools for 4 years, working. one-on-one with students to improve.

Approach

I believe that rewarding and encouraging students are key to success. I always like to discuss students' goals initially, and keep these goals in mind throughout the student's experience-- whether it is improving grades, learning a new gymnastics skill, or feeling more comfortable with reading and writing skills. Reminding students of their potential and giving them the tools to meet their goals, while allowing them to get there independently is how I choose to lead all my tutoring sessions.

English Tutoring

As an English major, I am consistently enrolled in upper-level English courses at Tulane each semester. Next semester, I will be starting graduate-level courses as I pursue my 4+1 English MA Degree. As a high school student, I also earned a 5 on the AP English Language and Composition exam.

Italian Tutoring

I have been studying Italian since my first semester at Tulane. I have gone from a beginner to an advanced-level student, taking courses instructed entirely in Italian, reading Italian books and writing Italian essays on a weekly basis. I also studied in Bologna, Italy for a semester with the Indiana University Bologna Consortial Program, a language-intensive program partnered with the Universita' di Bologna. I lived with Italian roommates, took all advanced courses in Italian, spoke, read and wrote in Italian on a daily basis.

Literature Tutoring

As an English major, I have taken numerous literature courses, gaining extensive knowledge in American and British literature, as well as poetry. I am very knowledgeable in American literature in particular, having studied Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Phillip Roth, Faulkner, J.D. Salinger, and many other classic authors. Literature and analytical research will be the focus of my 4+1 English MA program at Tulane. As a high school student, I also received a 5 on my AP English Literature and Composition exam.

Writing Tutoring

Writing is an essential component in the English major curriculum. I have successfully written many 10-20 page analytical essays and theses as an English major, and for other courses, receiving As on all major works. I have experience with analyzing literature, writing research papers, as well as policy briefs. Writing has always been one of my key strengths, and something that I greatly enjoy. I have experience editing as a Staff Writer for the Tulane Hullabaloo, as well as with my recent internship with Where Y'At Magazine.

AP English Tutoring

As a high school student, I took both AP English Language and Composition and AP English Literature and Composition, scoring a 5 on both exams. I excelled in both courses, receiving As. I also took AP Psychology and AP Art History as a high school student, scoring a 5 on each of those exams as well-- with such extensive prep and knowledge of AP courses, I believe I am very qualified to tutor AP English. I am also an English major at Tulane University, and will be starting the English 4+1 MA program at Tulane in the fall.

Study Skills Tutoring

Between studying for AP exams, the SATs and ACTs, and studying for midterms and finals each semester of college, I have gained key knowledge on the best ways to study as well as many tactics to avoid. As a tutor, I would be able to help students with making and using flash cards, outlining and re-reading material, creating study guides for them and practice tests. With these methods, I will be able to identify what material each student is weakest on, and provide extra focus on these areas so that students are extremely well-prepared for exams and can absorb the most knowledge possible.

Reading Comprehension Tutoring

As an English major undergraduate and an enrolled student in Tulane's 4+1 English MA program, I am highly skilled at the art of reading comprehension. As a tutor, I will be able to bring these skills to the table, teaching students not to rush through reading, and give them helpful reading techniques to fully absorb readings. I will also provide practice tests to go along with assigned readings after students have fully read each reading passage.

ACT English Tutoring

As a high school student, I scored a 34 on the English section of the ACT exam. This, combined with my extensive English studies as an English undergraduate and graduate major prove my qualifications in the subjects of grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension and essay writing. As a tutor, I will be able to bring all these skills to the table, helping students in each of these subjects by providing helpful test tips, practice studies, critique on essays, etc.
