Fun Facts

In addition to being an avid reader and writer, I love playing videogames and reading comics. I am a fan of games in general, and admire the ways that they can be an engaging entry point for building all kinds of skills essential to learning. I love to sing, and occasionally go to karaoke nights with friends, but most of my singing happens in my car.

About Me

I am a Nashville native attending Lipscomb University to earn my teaching license. In 2014, I graduated from Denison University with a B.A. in English - Writing and a 3.4 GPA. When I graduate from Lipscomb, I will be certified to teach English Language Arts to grades 6 through 12, but in the meantime my goal is to continue to hone my skills as an educator and a mentor for youth.

Experience

In college I was active in student leadership and co-curricular programming, co-founding the Denison Writers' Club my freshman year. Since graduating from college I've served as a near peer nashville">tutor and mentor for 9th grade students in Columbus OH, through City Year Columbus, as well as a Math nashville">tutor here in Nashville through Mathnasium of Green Hills. Working for Frog nashville">Tutoring gives me the chance to make a deeper impact on youth and provide support to those who need it.

Approach

I strongly believe that every student can be learn and grow when the proper supports are in place to help them succeed. One of the biggest boundaries to student growth is the mindset that their abilities are fixed, and that they're either good at something or they're not. As a nashville">tutor, I work to help guide students to the belief, and certainty, that they are capable of improving their skills, and to make that growth experience fun and rewarding.

Writing Tutoring

My time at Denison provided me with ample opportunities to hone my writing craft, both in creative and scholarly pursuits. Each of my classes, both within my major and beyond, gave me rigorous writing assignments in a variety of genres, from theory-based literature analysis to research-based curriculum advisory. I understand the rules and conventions of writing enough to play around with them, and it is that ease and comfort with writing that I hope to give to my students.

English Tutoring

My study of English language and literature has been a lifelong journey. I have been reading from a very young age and my tastes range from modern young adult fiction to British dystopian classics to Shakespeare. In college I was inducted into the National English Honorary, Sigma Tau Delta, and since graduating I have tutored high school students in reading, writing and literary analysis.

Algebra Tutoring

I have extensive experience tutoring Algebra, both in a 1:1 capacity and in small groups, and understand the subject well. In my time as a Math tutor I have worked with students in all grades, but I spent a year focusing just on Algebra with students in 9th and 10th grade. Though my area of expertise is English and writing, I have developed numerous strategies to make Algebra make sense and to make learning Algebra fun.

Spanish I Tutoring

Between high school and college I've studied Spanish for seven years and have continued to practice Spanish since graduation. My language skills have given me strategies to help recognize parallels between Spanish and other languages, as well as false cognates between Spanish and English. I have a love of language and I enjoy helping others discover the joys of Spanish in particular.

Math Tutoring

Over the past two years I have tutored students in Math extensively, in grades K-12. From solving for unknown variables to understanding part-whole relationships, I have accumulated numerous strategies to explain mathematical concepts and guide students to deeper understanding. I love Math and eager to help your student love it too.

Pre Algebra Tutoring

I have extensive experience tutoring Pre-Algebra, both in a 1:1 capacity and in small groups, and understand the subject well. In my time as a Math tutor I have worked with students in all grades, but I spent a year focusing just on Algebra with students in 9th and 10th grade.
