Fun Facts
Helping others is a passion of mine along with music, music festivals, scuba diving, photography, out door activities, family, friends and simply making a difference in the lives of the people who are around me. I love working with children in particular because they are so free spirited, innocent, and full of life. I eventually want to create my own non-profit organization in which I am able to help children become all that they can be that might not have all the resources they need to excel. I want to continue gaining more and more experience working with kids so that I can become the best teacher/austin">tutor that I can be. I love austin">tutoring/teaching because never have I dreaded going to "work," and I believe that people should not waste precious moments of their life doing things that they don't enjoy or that aren't making a difference.
About Me
My name is Amanda and I am senior at UT about to graduate! I grew up in a border town at the souther tip of Texas in Brownsville. Therefore, I am very accustom to the hispanic culture and relate closely with their culture. I speak Spanish, but am not completely fluent. My previous jobs have been mostly working with children, but I am currently a waitress and SO ready to get back to working with kids. austin">Tutoring one-on-one is my favorite setting because I feel that I can help a child out the most with all of my attention on his/her particular needs. My minor is English, but I also love austin">tutoring math. I'd love the opportunity to make a difference in these children's lives by passing on knowledge that was once passed on to me. My philosophy on life is simply cherishing every moment of your life, and I will do my best to be a great, positive role model to the kids and to always encourage them to chase their dreams and that nothing is impossible!
My first experience working with children was in a Pre-K setting where I was the teacher's assistant. I would help the students by reading to them, practicing the alphabet with them, and doing basic math. Then I went on to work at the UT daycare in all the different rooms (infant, toddler, and pre-k), where I would provide assistance to the Pre-K aged students with their academic activities. My next job was at a summer and after school program where I was in charge of the homework room with elementary and middle school aged children. My last job working with children I was an ABA therapist in which I worked with elementary and middle school aged children in academics, life skills, and social skills. I aslo volunteered for a middle school drop out prevention program in which I tutored at risk middle school aged children in reading and math. I completed more than half of the UT teaching program where I would teach lessons and help austin">tutor elementary and middle schoolers. I have a lot of experience austin">tutoring/teaching because it is a passion of mine. I want to stay in Austin for another year gaining more experience working with children and then I want to leave to teach English abroad somewhere in Central or South America.
I try and first get to know the child on a person level so that we can create a bond and so that the child will begin to trust me. Then I observe the child's strengths and weaknesses and accommodate my austin">tutoring style to their needs. I always try and make the austin">tutoring session as fun as I can and teach them to associate learning with having fun. I love to make games out of lessons and keep the child smiling and encouraged to do their best. I love rewarding the students with praise, stickers, and whatever makes them happy.
