Fun Facts
I love to move. Whether it's playing sports, hiking outdoors, or dancing in a ballet studio, my passion for movement keeps me grounded and happy. After I finish denver">tutoring for the day, don't be surprised if I'm headed to ballet class to pirouette, jete, and waltz across the dance floor!
About Me
I am a graduate student in the School of Education & Human Development at the University of Colorado Denver. This June of 2013, I will earn my Teacher Certification in Science and Math. Ultimately I hope to work with students one-on-one and in small groups, acting as both their denver">tutor and mentor, to prepare them for fulfilling professional and personal lives.
For the better part of the last decade, I have been involved in education and human development. I taught lab courses to undergraduate students at the University of Colorado Boulder, guided masters students on their theses in West Africa, and trained fellow graduate students on cancer research. At the other end of the spectrum, I have tutored elementary-aged child refugees who were 2+ years behind their peers in math, and I taught sixth grade math in West Africa without the aid of a textbook. During my student-teaching in the greater Denver area, I worked with high-flying high schoolers taking 5 AP classes, and with high school students with limited proficiency in reading and writing English. Throughout my middle school student-teaching, I worked closely with Gifted and Talented kids and behavior Special Ed kids alike. In addition, I have a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from Rice University and a Masters degree in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology from the University of Colorado Boulder.
My denver">tutoring approach is customized to the needs of the student. I will work with the student (and parents and teachers/professors, if desired) to develop specific goals for denver">tutoring sessions. I will monitor the student's progress towards these goals, seeing what does and does not work to help the student's performance. I will also guide the student on being reflective of their own learning process. Getting to know the student's strengths is an additional aspect to my denver">tutoring approach. By building on the student's interests and assets, I can help them add new conceptual understandings to their existing mental frameworks, which increases student motivation and learning.
