Fun Facts

A fun fact about me is that I am very adventurous and spontaneous! Whenever I have free time, I try to go to the city with great company and do different things each time. Also, I a huge foodie so I love to be on the prowl for new, amazing restaurants and delicious bakeries with decadent pastries. When I was younger, I honestly wanted to be a professional cake decorator and watched so many Food Network cake challenges. I hope to take a baking class sometime soon!

About Me

I'm a senior at UC Berkeley as a psychology major. I'm originally from San Jose, which is South of the bay, but I'm currently based in Berkley. For the past two summers I interned at Facebook at their headquarters in Menlo Park, CA. I was first a diversity team intern where most of my work was research, then during my second summer I interned in their recruiting events team. After graduation, I will be working at Facebook HQ as an engagement specialist in the recruiting programs and events team.

Experience

Prior to college, I was a bi-weekly private home tutor for an elementary student and provided academic help in a variety of subjects while offering good study habits. During college, I was a tutor for the AVID program in both a middle and high school where students are placed into tutorial groups based on subjects. I facilitated group discussions, initiated critical thinking, and taught them how to do effective note taking. I was part of this program when I was in younger, so I was glad to help!

Approach

As a child, I came from a very low-income single parent household where my older sibling didn't graduate high school nor go to college. I had no idea how to get to college but I knew I was meant to go so I surrounded myself with teachers/counselors who saw the potential in me and pushed my boundaries. As a tutor, I not only want to help my students academically but personally as well. I want to foster self-love and confidence so that they are able to realize their passions and gifts.

English Tutoring

In high school, I took both English language and literature advanced placement classes and performed very well in AP testing. In college I took two writing courses that focused on worldwide texts from other countries and received high marks on my essays. I enjoy proof reading essays and making suggestions in how to strengthen them (i.e. maybe changing how they structure the essay or advising how they should convey their opinions based on the essay type and audience).

Spanish Tutoring

I am a native Spanish speaker who can read and write as well. In elementary I was placed in bilingual classrooms and in high school I took advanced placement Spanish literature/language classes for native speakers. Teaching Spanish is very natural for me and I would like to teach my students colloquial/conversational Spanish so they have a deeper language experience.

Study Skills Tutoring

Especially in preparation for high school and college, I can hand down tips as to the different ways that they can study in order to succeed in exams and assignments. If the child is a visual learner (like me) I would encourage them to draw out illustrations of math problems, create venn diagrams of large concepts, or study by using illustrated flash cards. I can definitely change my tutoring style to fit the academic needs of my students.

Homework Coach Tutoring

As a prior private tutor, I am experienced in motivating students to finish their homework and help them see that homework is definitely worthwhile. As a psychology major, I have taken classes around child behavior and development so I can definitely shed light as to what I've learned and change my tutoring practices to suit my students. Overall, I want my students to have fun and encourage them to see the bigger picture of academics and how it affects their future.

Math Tutoring

I tutored 5th grade math for half a year and my student was very receptive to my teaching style. I'm very patient with students struggling with math and can communicate to students what they need to figure out and how. I like to illustrate what the equations and word problems mean so students can have a better visual conception of what is being asked.

Reading Comprehension Tutoring

I enjoy reading to kids and asking them along the way what the story/book is about. In the past, I read to kindergarten students and had them retell the story back to me to check for comprehension. I can also implement writing workshops by having students write mini summaries of stories and check for vocabulary use.
