Fun Facts

One hobby that I am really passionate about is Latin dance, specifically salsa and bachata. Whenever I get some time, I am either practicing out or studying the dance form via books and Youtube videos. I also performed at a festival in April 2017. My desire to master the musicality of salsa and bachata has also led me to practice learning Spanish. In fact, I'm currently learning both Spanish and French independently.

About Me

I recently graduated with a Master of Public Health with a concentration in Public Health Analytics. Before that, I graduated from Boston College magna cum laude with a B.S. in Chemistry and was also a salutatorian at Fort Hamilton High School. At Boston College, I was in the Dean's List during all semesters. I hope to eventually attend medical school. Between the two degrees, I did bioimaging research at Temple Medical School.

Experience

I have extensive teaching and tutoring experience. I have close to 1,000 hours of classroom teaching experience with well-known test prep companies in biology, general and organic chemistry, and physics. I also have several hundred hours doing private tutoring in college-level math and science coursework. In my volunteering as well education is a big part of my life mission; I deliver Alzheimer's webinars, teach ESL students, and write courses for the underprivileged through PEOI.

Approach

During my schooling, I've constantly strived to go one step beyond the minimum requirements to learn the subject matter "once and for all." So in addition to building my required knowledge, I would also try different learning strategies (e.g. outlining, concept mapping, questioning, imagery, etc.) to see what works for various subjects. Using these experiences, I hope to enrich and make efficient my tutoring sessions as well as impart this passion for learning and "learning about learning."

MCAT Tutoring

I have extensive experience teaching MCAT classes for test prep companies since August 2017, teaching the science subjects biochemistry, biology, general and organic chemistry, physics, and psychology and sociology. I have worked with students in a variety of programs from undergraduate to postbac to career changers.
My MCAT Score: Physical Science 132 (100th percentile), CARS 125 (35th percentile), Biological Science 131 (98th percentile), Behavioral Science 132 (100th percentile). I definitely feel my extensive preparation for and understanding of the science sections of the MCAT would be useful for whoever would like to work with me. During my MCAT studying, I had gone through 5000+ questions from a variety of resources like Princeton Review, Kaplan, Examkrackers, Khan Academy, Berkeley Review, and Next Step - all structured around the AAMC outline. Hence, I'm fairly well-versed in what type of resources are best for each topic and skill listed in the AAMC outline. Especially with the sciences, I was able to build efficient strategies to tackle experiment-based and non-experiment-based passages (I finished all 3 sciences 10-20 mins early). I also currently tutor college biology, college and AP physics, and multivariable calculus through Frog Tutoring; so with these and a B.S. in chemistry, my content knowledge of the MCAT is fairly solid. With my experience, I'm confident I can help you get close to or even beyond your desired scores in the MCAT sciences.

--> General structure of my tutoring sessions: before our session, we will identify topics you struggle with; let's say you struggle with Topic A. Then, in our meeting: 1) Review major concepts of Topic A; 2) cover free-standing questions relevant to Topic A from Khan Academy; and 3) solve together at least one passage from Khan Academy relevant to Topic A together, using a general passage reading strategy that I will send to you beforehand. This way, whether you want to take one session or several sessions with me, my tutoring will help on 2 major fronts: tackling the content you're having trouble with as well as receiving some guidance in tackling passages in an efficient and strategic way.

--> Homework I'd assign to solidify the things we cover in the tutoring session: 1) read/reread Topic A in your test prep books; 2) finish the remaining Khan Academy FSQs for Topic A; 3) do practice passages to reinforce Topic A (these would be from Princeton Review, Kaplan, Khan Academy, etc.); and 4) journal your mistakes in a Content Journal and a Strategy Journal.

Last but not least, even if our tutoring session ends, I'm always available outside of that via email to answer questions, be they about general MCAT advice or issues you're having with specific practice questions/passages. Thank you for considering me as a tutor!

SAT Math Tutoring

Got perfect 800 on the Math section of SAT I. Also got perfect 800 on SAT Subject Test Math II and 760 on Math I. Also had 5 on AP Calc BC. As part of the National Honor Society at my high school, also helped a struggling student do well enough on the SAT Math section to get his football scholarship to Syracuse.

Algebra Tutoring

Math has in general been one of my strong suits. In high school, I had skipped a grade in math, gotten a 5 on the AP calc BC, a perfect 800 on the SAT I Math, a perfect 800 on the SAT II Math 2 Subject Test, a 760 on the SAT II Math 1 Subject Test. In undergraduate, while my major course of study was chemistry, I still did well in my higher level math electives like multivariable calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations.
As a tutor, in high school I had tutored a football player well enough to help him get the score he needed to be able to go to his top-choice Syracuse. I currently tutor in multivariable calculus through another company.
My approach to the subject would be as follows: in each session, we will review every topic in depth to ensure you are caught up with classwork; then we will tackle a large volume of relevant problems to solidify those topics - alongside these problems, we will keep a journal of your most frequent mistakes to keep track of your progress. With my approach and experience, I'm confident I can help you improve your performance in the course.

AP Chemistry Tutoring

Got 5 on AP Chemistry in junior year of high school. Also scored 780 on SAT II Subject Test in Chemistry.

Even though my school preferred students to do a basic level chem course before the AP course, I went directly into AP and consistently topped the class in exams and grades. Later on, I majored in chemistry during college so have studied AP chem topics in very good detail through courses like Organic Chem, Inorganic Chem, Biochem, Chemical Biology (graduate level), Organometallic chem (graduate level), Thermodynamics, Quantum Chemistry, Chemical Instrumentation, Analytical Chemistry, etc. Also received an Undergrad chemistry award by being one of 2 top-scorers in a cumulative chemistry exam administered to the graduating chemistry class.

AP Physics Tutoring

Self-studied AP Physics C: Mechanics in senior year and got a 4 (missed out on 5 because was self-studying this on top of APs Bio, Gov't, Psych, English Lit, and Studio Art)

Biology Tutoring

Got a 5 on AP Bio in senior year of high school. Was consistently near the top of the class in exams and grades and one of very few people to get the 5 in the class. I've also taken more advanced biology classes in college to learn these AP Bio topics in more detail: e.g. Cell Biology, Physiology, Neuroscience, Biochemistry, etc.

AP History Tutoring

In high school, scored 5s on both AP US and AP World History exams as well as 760s on the SAT II Subject Tests for both subjects. I had a fun and interesting but highly effective learning strategy for both subjects that allowed me to learn the material not just for the exams but also in the long-term. The strategy involved vividly visualizing the events we were required to learn as well as CONSTANTLY making lots of comparisons; this meant making comparisons/contrasts in 3 different categories: 1) culture A vs. culture B in same time period; 2) culture A in different time periods; and 3) culture A vs. culture B in different time periods.
