Fun Facts

In my free time I enjoy golfing, skiing, basketball, and yoga (to name a few). I like to stay very active outside the classroom. One fun fact about me is I wore shorts throughout my entire high school, but I had to give in and put pants on when I went to college in Maine!

About Me

I am a rising Junior at Bates College, a small liberal arts college in Maine. I am a Mathematics/Physics double major with a Philosophy Concentration. I grew up in Portland, Oregon going to school at Catlin Gabel, a small private school in Beaverton.

I very much enjoy teaching and get great satisfaction seeing the strides my students are able to achieve in such a short time. I tutored privately over my last two summers in algebra/oregon/portland">Pre Algebra and calculus/oregon/portland">Pre Calculus, and at school during my first semester this year in Calculus II. I did not continue into my second semester because I was overloading on classes, which made me very busy.

My approach to portland">tutoring math is to introduce and fully explain the big picture before tackling specific examples. If you can understand the basic principles behind an area of math it makes the specific examples much easier to understand. In addition to providing math instruction, I believe a portland">tutor should also be a role model, mentor, and friend to the student. Whether trying to catch up with or leap ahead of peers, the most important factor towards a student's success is his confidence. Encouraging the student, speaking to him or her like a peer and friend, and leading by example all help build confidence.
