Fun Facts
My dissertation is on nineteenth century maritime literature of Brazil, Britain, and the US, though I know nothing about sailing. I spend a lot of time playing guitar and taking my dog swimming. I'm originally from Minnesota and love living in Texas.
About Me
I recently finished my PhD at the University of Texas, studying Comparative Literature. I am looking to become a professor of literature or language in Texas or the Southwest.
Experience
During gradute school at UT I taught English literature, Spanish, and Portuguese. I have also tutored in those subjects and really enjoy working with students one on one. In addition to university students, I have tutored high school students, primarily in writing skills.
Approach
As a career instructor of the humanities, I try to assist students in developing critical thinking and rhetorical skills regardless of the subject. I especially enjoy the way that tutoring affords the ability to dialogue and form learning strategies with the individual student. This allows us to work together in targeted ways that work best for the individual learner. I try to mingle working directly towards a test/assessment and building broader study skills that will remain useful.

PhdEnglish Tutoring
I have a doctorate in Comparative Literature, so I have spent years both studying and teaching literature. Part of my focus in graduate school was on literature of the United States and Britain, so I am particularly familiar with those areas. I also emphasized writing skills throughout the courses I've taught at the college level.
History Tutoring
As an undergraduate I was a political science major which gave me a strong foundation in history. In graduate school my literary studies were largely focused on historical events to my knowledge of both American and global history has grown tremendously in the past few years. My doctoral research project required as much historical research as literary research.
Literature Tutoring
As a professional literary scholar I have a unique familiarity with literature. Since I studied comparative literature, I am versed in both American and global literature. I spent seven years studying literature at the University of Texas and consider it to be my specialty.
Philosophy Tutoring
While I did not formally study it in graduate or undergradute school, philosophy has always been a focal interest in my studies. During college I earned a minor in an area of studies focused on philosophy. In graduate school, for instance, my masters thesis discusses the relationship between philosophy and fiction in the work of a Brazilian author.
Political Science Tutoring
My undergraduate major degree is in political science, so the majority of my undergraduate course work was devoted to this subject. My doctoral dissertation also heavily involved global politics.
Portuguese Tutoring
As I study Brazilian literature, Portuguese is my most advanced foreign language. I have taught several semesters of Portuguese (intro, intermediate, and literature and culture) at UT.
Reading Comprehension Tutoring
Aside from my constant scholarly work involving reading and writing, I have tutored extensively on reading comprehension skills, particularly in preparation for the ACT test.
Religion Tutoring
In college I took courses on comparative religion including Islam and Buddhism. I have tutored for a high school religion course. Furthermore, my literary studies are constantly related to religious themes and ideas as understanding much of western literature requires considerable knowledge of Christianity.

I have studied Spanish for many years and have taught several semesters at the University of Texas.
Spanish II Tutoring

Study Skills Tutoring
Working with both college students as an instructor and tutor as well as tutoring high school students has allowed me to develop a keen sensibility for study skills and methods for fostering these skills in students.
Writing Tutoring
Writing is always a primary focus in courses I teach and really the most important component of liberal arts education. I have worked extensively both as a tutor and a class instructor on writing skills both at the sentence level and wholistically.
