About Me
After growing up in south central Pennsylvania, I studied Civil Engineering at Virginia Tech and volunteered in Latin America and Sub-Sarahan Africa. Recently, I got married to the love of my life, and we are both studying at Candler School of Theology at Emory University. In the future, we hope to work long-term doing international urban community development work.
During my high school and college experiences, I have helped tutor my peers in mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering, and several languages. I enjoy helping people understand and feel motivated about material that they are learning, so that they can engage and use the tools they receive in classes more effectively. More recently, I have tutored refugees in Clarkston, GA to help improve their English reading and speaking skills.
Generally, I look for root issues that are preventing a student from understanding and learning material on their own. I begin by asking a student what he or she is struggling with as well as looking over past assignments, tests, and feedback from teachers. While different methods will be more effective for different students and subject matters, I do not believe students should always memorize information. My engineering education has helped me to learn that understanding the way something works is much better (and often easier!) than memorization because it leads to a true understanding of the way the world works.
