Fun Facts

I am into several sports and used to (as well as currently do for fun) play soccer, volleyball, and practice jiu-jitsu. I used to also play the piano as a kid but music wasn't anything I had an extreme talent for. I haven't done this in a while but used to meet up with friends on weekends to play board/video games.

About Me

I am a Civil Engineering Bachelor's student and have been attending college since I graduated in 2008 from high school. The reason why I haven't finished college yet is because I've been attending part time for several terms due to working a couple of part-time jobs in conjunction with school. I also took a year off from academics in 2011-2012 as a break and worked to save up money. I'm expected to graduate in the spring of 2014 and can hopefully begin work full time in my field of study.

My experience tutoring has not been an official job as a tutor before. Instead, particularly while I was enrolled at Clark College, I would help/tutor several of my classmates after classes in understanding material as well as help them with their homework. My reasons for doing this were mainly because I enjoyed helping others and seeing the how my inputted time typically improved their grades. The secondary reason why I would tutor them was because by going over material I would more easily solidify what I had learned in class that day. Though not exactly tutoring I have also substituted in as a youth pastor at my church if the regular teachers can't attend (I'm pretty good at getting along with kids).

My typical approach involves developing some kind of rapport with a student to make it easier to convey ideas, ask if there is a specific area of study that a student does not understand, and then go over that material. I find that working through actual examples rather than purely reading or observing book examples helps far more in the learning process. For me personally I learn far better doing homework problems than I do listening in class so I would probably put more emphasis in work rather than on lecturing. If material is based more so on memorizing facts I find flash cards useful or try to relate material to something a student may already have knowledge about.
