Fun Facts

I am currently student teaching in an 11th grade class in Boston public schools. I ran 400m hurdles on the BU Track & Field team, and even though it is arguably one of the most difficult races physically and mentally I truly love it. I'm also involved in a Christian organization on campus where I lead college students in bible studies. As for hobbies, I really enjoy singing and have sung in a few choruses, plus I have always wanted to be in a musical.

About Me

I love reading and writing. I enjoy both classics like Austen and Dickens and more modern novels like those by John Green and Jodi Picoult. I especially love rereading Harry Potter books and writing fanfiction (fan-written stories based on characters from the book) about Harry Potter characters. I have a few plans, jotted down in various notebooks, for future books and would love to publish my own novel someday. I think all students should be able to write proficiently and find at least one book that they truly enjoy reading. I have a passion for teaching and would love more opportunities to gain experience before I start my student teaching.

I learn best by teaching, so I used to teach my friends how to do the math problems in our Calculus class and we all successfully passed. I tutored a 9th grade girl in Spanish when I was a junior in high school. I wish I still knew Spanish (especially because my entire Dad's side of the family speaks Spanish), but I have since forgotten it and will be more proficient as an English tutor. Despite that fact, I have only done very informal English tutoring with friends and classmates, by helping them streamline their writing and study for their tests. I would love the opportunity to teach this summer, though.

First of all, I believe all students, regardless of disability, background, or previous educational experiences, is capable of learning. I would first want to assess how well the student can read comprehensively and write both analytically and creatively by looking at their previous work and asking them to do a few practice tasks. I would encourage them to reread; first, read for content, then for meaning and smaller details. For some longer readings, that is impractical so I would teach them how to look for grammar shifts, descriptive imagery, tone, and recurring themes. I would stress the importance of close reading and making sure all their ideas are supported in the texts.
