Fun Facts

I grew up in Illinois and moved to Utah by myself 6 years ago to go to college. I’m the oldest of 3 siblings. Growing up in a family like that I learned how to take responsibility and I think that’s something I’ve carried with me throughout my life.

About Me

My name is Briana Bruin and I am a perfect fit for your family. I graduated with a degree in Elementary Education in May 2016 and I am excited to put my training to use. I am very interested in pursuing this exceptional opportunity through my desire to personally guide students. Through my professional experiences as an Elementary Education major I have learned the skills that are necessary to fulfill the requirements for this position.

Experience

I have been trained in reading programs such as the University of Utah Reading clinic programs Next Steps and Higher Steps and have tutored students in these programs for 2 years. I have also tutored students during my student teaching in subjects such as Math, Writing, Science, and L.A. I have created and developed Lesson Plans for all of these subjects and have seen a drastic increase in student performance on tests in these subject areas.

Approach

Although I enjoyed being in a classroom setting I realized that I wanted to dedicated myself to serving others in a personalized setting. I love being able to connect with students on a personalized level. During my student teaching I learned how to work on a team, demonstrate problem solving skills, and communicate with others effectively. These skills translate well to my approach which teaches students how to be intrinsically motivated, problem solve, and read fluently and accurately.

Elementary Math Tutoring

I student taught in a 3rd grade classroom in a title I urban school where I taught math twice a day, 4 days a week. I would review problem solving skills, spatial awareness, analyzing measurement and data, and multiplying and dividing in base ten. I have also worked one on one with students from K-6 in math with modeling, quantitative reasoning, and using factual evidence to express reasoning.

Homework Coach Tutoring

I currently work with two different families after school to help a 2nd grader, a 3rd grader, and a 6th grader with homework help in math and reading. I review over the homework by modeling any difficult concepts for the students and by correcting any wrong answers by explaining why they are wrong. I also corrected math homework every morning during my student teaching by displaying the homework on the board and modeling each problem.

Arts Tutoring

I frequently incorporated the Arts into my lessons during student teaching. For example, for a social studies lesson on the civil war I had students choose between creating a song, or acting out what life was like during the civil war. I also incorporated art into a science unit by having students create their own dioramas of different ecosystems.

Study Skills Tutoring

During student teaching I encouraged students to stay organized and have a place for all of their papers. We also kept planners in the classroom and gave them a sticker every day they brought back their homework. We also had various class duties such as collecting papers, filing, etc.. this helped students to learn to be responsible and organized.

Spanish Tutoring

I took 4 years of Spanish in high school and two semesters in college. I received As and Bs in all of these classes. I understand basic speaking, listening, writing, and reading of Spanish.

English Tutoring

I have been trained in reading programs such as the University of Utah Reading clinic programs Next Steps and Higher Steps and have tutored students in these programs for 2 years. For example, I once created a reading vocabulary lesson which involved my students using their own background knowledge to come up with examples of how they would use the vocabulary word in a sentence. I also had students come up with an example of when they would use that word in a real life scenario. Not only were my students engaged, but on the post-test I saw scores increase from an average of 60% to an average of 80%.

Religion Tutoring

I am an active member of the LDS church and also worked with a variety of different cultures and religions in the Title I school I worked at. I also took a world civ class in college and received an A in it. I found learning about different cultures and religions fascinating and would love to relay that passion to students.

Science Tutoring

I once created a science lesson on forces. I read to students a story about forces that push and pull and listed different examples around the classroom. I then had students cut out cards with various examples of push/pull forces on them and sort them into their proper categories. Students were engaged and used their background knowledge to defend their reasoning.

Social Studies Tutoring

During my student teaching I took a Social Studies Methods class and prepared an entire unit on based on the third grade social studies common core standards. I also prepared and taught a lesson to a 6th grade classroom on ancient civilizations. The students were asked to work in groups to analyze encyclopedias to answer specific questions about different types of ancient civilizations. Not only were the students highly engaged, they were also accurate in their answers and used text evidence to support those answers.

Writing Tutoring

I worked with them on introducing a topic sentence, using supporting details, and writing a solid conclusion. I also encouraged students to use linking words and academic language in their writing.
