In May I returned from a semester abroad in Prague that was undoubtedly the most rewarding four months of my life. Traveling, dancing, and seeing live music of any genre are my biggest hobbies. While I'm a sucker for anything written by the hilarious Miami local, Dave Barry, I enjoy reading non-fiction books, and Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson is my favorite. I've studied elementary Chinese for 5 weeks in Nanjing, China, babysat my cousins' neighbors for 2 weeks in Geneva, Switzerland.
About Me
My personal motto is "grab life by the horns," and its by following this motto and having so many incredible, diverse experiences that I mesh so easily with new people. Motivation, dedication, and enthusiasm are my most potent qualities. I work well individually, one-on-one, and in groups, and I am very dependable with excellent recommendations to state just that.
This coming academic year will be my fourth year working with the miami">University of Miami student organization Kids N' Culture, an organization dedicated to mentoring and miami">tutoring elementary and middle school students from underserved Miami-Dade county schools. I go once or twice a week and sit with 1-3 students at a time for an hour and a half for homework help, and their homework covers all major areas of study. I also babysit children ages 5 - 15 over most of my school breaks, and as part of the job I provide homework help or become the watchful eye that makes sure they complete their homework to their fullest potential. Lastly, this past semester in Prague, I taught weekly conversational ESL classes to high school Czech students interested in practicing English and learning more about American culture.
To me, miami">tutoring is not teaching students a subject but rather teaching students how to teach themselves. For instance, with math, it's of course acceptable for a student to ask for help on individual questions, but I generally only review the steps of how to complete that type of problem; I do not do that exact problem with them. When they hand me their homework to correct, I mark off the right ones with a check, leave the wrong ones blank, and hand it back to them so that they (1) practice looking carefully at their own paper to find the incorrect answers and (2) try to correct problems on their own before asking for my assistance. It is important to get a sense for how the child learns (visual vs. auditory; slow vs. fast), to be motivational but not pushy, and to make miami">tutoring sessions fun while maint
