Fun Facts

I've loved to write ever since I created a five paragraph story in fifth grade that I thought was a work of art. Since then, I've been published in informative magazines and newspapers, plus have penned everything from poetry to fiction to stage plays (I've actually sold a play--so I'm a pro!) to academic discourse (one I presented at a conference). I also enjoy teaching, public speaking, and leadership--I'm just fine in front of a crowd! Cats are also quite amazing.

About Me

I am a second year Junior at Oklahoma Christian University, majoring in Bible, minoring in Communication Studies, and participating in the University's Honors Program. When I graduate I hope to continue my education with masters and doctorate degrees in Biblical studies, communication and/or education. Eventually, I'd like to become a college professor and serve in higher education administration.

Experience

As a fifth grader, I assisted a kindergarten class with basic math. In high school, I worked as a study hall tutor for freshmen and sophomores, worked on writing skills with first graders, and helped special needs elementary kids with reading pronunciation and comprehension. In college, I mostly make myself useful by reading frantic freshmen's papers late at night and giving them feedback.

Approach

In 3rd grade, I read far below my grade level. After my teacher saw I needed individual help, she gave me special oppurunities to grow how I learned best and in one year I began to read at a middle school level. As a tutor, I believe everyone learns differently and it's my job to adapt to the style that best helps a student exceed. Additionally, I teach real tools to tackle hard subjects: instead of lecturing on all the answers, I want to teach students HOW to think, not what to think.

Communication Tutoring

I've been public speaking outside of school since sixth grade, including several gold medals in speech competitions. I took three years of Speech and Debate in High School, earning A's, and did a little Lincoln-Douglas debate with the debate team. In college, I've gotten A's in Oral Communication, Interpersonal Communication, and Argumentation and Debate where I learned the academic side of communication.

Religion Tutoring

I've been raised all my life in the Christian Faith, so I've been around Christianity, Scripture, and religion for my whole life. In addition to having read various books on spiritual, defense of the faith, and Biblical study, I've completed courses for my major in ministry, personal evangelism, Biblical exegesis (interpretation), New Testament, Old Testament, evidence of Christianity, as well as currently being enrolled in New Testament Greek--all with A's. While I published devotional and encouraging religious articles, I'm working on publishing some of my academic papers in undergraduate journals.

Study Skills Tutoring

Freshmen year, I learned the hard way the importance of studying, especially taking four Honors classes that first year. After having various sessions with the research librarian, I've learned how to utilize campus resources to study and find sources for papers. Having maintained A's while maintaining relationships, school leadership positions,a job, and the demands of schoolwork, I know how to study.

Writing Tutoring

My writing has traditionally earned me the respect of English teachers: since 8th grade I was placed in the accelerated English classes, my Freshmen year after an A in a journalism course I was asked to join the school newspaper, my junior year I earned an A in AP Language and Composition (with a 5 on the AP Test), and my senior year I wrote various college-level Humanities research papers in a concurrent enrollment course. In college, the Honors courses are writing-heavy, but I've still managed to pull A's in the classes and on the multiple research papers. Considering I've been published in a magazine, newspaper, and various times on the web, my writing is finely practice.

AP English Tutoring

Since 8th grade, I was placed in the accelerated English classes and in my junior year, I earned an A in AP Language and Composition (with the highest possible score of a 5 on the AP Test). Since APLAC, I've written various college-level research papers in literature, history, Bible, ethics and for Honors courses--always with A's on the papers. Considering also my background in argumentation and debate, I know well how to structure a logical argument in a short amount of time. All of this gives me the extra experience needed to help any student succeed in AP English classes, by being a thoughtful writer and critical thinker.

English Tutoring

I have lots of experience succeeding in even advanced English courses: I was placed in the accelerated English classes 8th grade on up, my junior year I earned an A in AP Language and Composition (with a 5 on the AP Test), and my senior year I took a concurrent enrollment Western Literature course for college credit. In college, the Honors Program has prepared me to tutor English by providing two intensive semesters of Western Thought and Expression (Both A's). All this allows me to train students in how to succeed in English in high school, and what to prepare for in college.

Geography Tutoring

In middle school and high school, geography made up a unit of the social studies courses, of which I highly excelled and created creative projects to demonstrate my knowledge. My freshmen year of high school, I took AP Human Geography, which includes more than just physical geography, and managed to get a 5 (highest score possible) on the AP test, including several high scores on country-memorization tests.

SAT Verbal/Writing Tutoring

I've had a history of excelling at writing and reading comprehension. Along with many A+ writing assignments, my junior year I earned an A in AP Language and Composition (with a 5 on the AP Test), where I learned how to write an essay with little information and a time limit. This I applied to the SAT where I got in the top 15 percentile. With all the English classes under my belt, my training in argumentation, and my knowledge of Latin roots and the Greek language, I know well how to read closely, pick up on arguments, and know words I don't know.

Homework Coach Tutoring

For many students, homework is difficult and boring. I certainly wasn't a fan, but with self-discipline, I learned to accomplish homework effectively and thoroughly. I've learned where to find the answers to homework questions that suited my learning style, but also taught me the process so I could solve the problems in the future. My Honor Roll status throughout Middle and High school, while taking advanced classes, should speak to my skills at managing difficult homework.

ACT English Tutoring

For the English component of my ACT, I scored a 30, which is better than 92% of the other testers that year. Also, along with many A+ writing assignments, my junior year I earned an A in AP Language and Composition (with a 5 on the AP Test), where I learned how to write an essay with little information and a time limit. In college, I've written a dozen A+ scholarly essays over literature, the Bible, ethics, and history.

ACT Reading Tutoring

For the Reading component (Which includes social studies and literature) of my ACT, I scored a 31, which is better than 93% of the other testers that year. In middle school and high school, I was placed in accelerated English courses where we were assigned books with difficult themes, cultural differences, or otherwise confusing language to challenge us. All the English classes under my belt, plus my training in argumentation, and my knowledge of Latin roots and the Greek language, all contribute to me reading closely, picking up on arguments, and knowing words I don't know.

Microsoft Word Tutoring

Since I love to write, I've quickly learned the ins and outs of Word, including page formatting, document organization, and styling. I've worked with Word in it's various updates for over 10 years. Additionally, from various research paper writing experiences, I know how to format a paper for MLA, APA, and Chicago/Turabian (including footnotes).

Video Production Tutoring

I've loved making videos and movies since elementary school, and I have an impressive number of videos I've helped produce. In high school, I furthered my skills with a Broadcasting and Social Media course which trained me in live video production, documentary style, stop-motion animation, and short films. In this class, I was voted best director and best actor for the year. Over the years, I've become proficient in green screen technology, boom mic operation, Pinnacle Studios software, HitFilm software, Windows Movie Maker, and music for videos.

Reading Comprehension Tutoring

In fifth and sixth grade, my teachers placed me in the advanced reading group because the material at my age level was far from a challenge. In middle school and high school, I was placed in accelerated English courses where we were assigned books with difficult themes, cultural differences, or otherwise confusing language to challenge us. With specific experience helping special needs students with reading and with plenty of experience reading myself, I bring lots of training in reading comprehension at any level.
