About Me

I'm an adjunct college professor with a small child who'd like some flexibility in my work schedule. I've taught English 100, 101, and 102 at various schools in the Chicagoland area. I also worked at Sylvan Learning Center, and I've worked in a junior high school as a teacher's aide for at-risk students. I have a BA in English from Texas Christian University and an MA in Writing from DePaul University.

In many ways, being a teacher is like being a chicago">tutor. I do quite a bit of one-on-one teaching with students during office hours. I've also tutored in high school and college with great success. In addition, I started a volunteer chicago">tutoring program at my church, which did quite well.

I like to break down writing into small sections--manageable chunks. I like to tell students that academic writing has a basic formula, like a math or science problem might. Then I break down the formula for them, which is really rather easy when one thinks of writing in this way. After they understand that, we talk...a lot. Students have to understand that half of the work is in the thinking, and as we talk, I see the lightbulbs going off. They need reassurance that what they are thinking has some merit, and it usually does. I really give them the confidence to trust themselves and the ability think critically about something. They then simply plug their thoughts into the formula. Once they know the formula well, they can then deviate from it.
