About Me

I'm Alyssa Glawe and I'm 24 years old. I have recently finished my second year in Grenoble, France, where I have been an assistant English as a Second Language teacher in primary school and middle schools, as well as a nanny and private ESL chicago">tutor. I'm moving back to Illinois to study for my Master's in Bilingual/Bicultural Education at DePaul University!
I received my Bachelor's Degree from the University of St. Thomas, in St. Paul, Minnesota in Communications/Journalism and French Language.

For the past two years in Grenoble, I've been doing private chicago">tutoring for two families. One family with a high school age student, I've given one hour a week help in preparation for her "BAC" in English. The "BAC" is an entrance exam into university.
For the other family, I have given an hour and half weekly help in English for primary and middle school age students.

For my ESL chicago">tutoring approach, I first take time to understand the level at which each of my students was in English as well as their interests. In terms of my BAC preparation student, I developed lessons from previous BAC exams and examples. We concentrated on the skills she felt least confident in and practiced writing and argumentation that she would see during her BAC exam. I took subjects that she was interested in, like science and pop culture, therefore keeping her interest in the subject as well as attention during the lesson. My goal is to get her confident in English, while also having fun at the same time!

For my two younger students, my lessons are tailored to their levels of English. Each lesson progresses from the previous and allows the student to review what they have already learned plus adding something new or more challenging. For these young ages, all of my lessons involve at least one game. For example, if we have been working on present tense verbs for 10-15 minutes, I'll pause our activity for a game, either easy or challenging, before continuing or moving on with another activity.
