Fun Facts

I was born in Brazil and I have lived in 5 different countries throughout my life (Brazil, South Korea, Switzerland, Canada and U.S.A.). I can speak 4 languages; Portuguese, Spanish, French and English. I am very passionate about soccer; I have always played competitively and even traveled abroad to participate in a youth world cup. I am also a musician. I have played the drums for 10 years and been a DJ for 8 years. I also enjoy exploring nature, surfing and skiing.

About Me

After graduating from UC San Diego with a major in Physiology and Neuroscience, I worked with Alzheimer's Disease research. I am now a third year medical student at Georgetown University School of Medicine. It is my goal to become a Cardiologist. Through tutoring, I can fulfill my two passions--learning more and helping others.
As a mentor, I am determined to share my expertise in certain subject areas with a professional, compassionate and dedicated attitude.

Experience

Before leaving home for college (2012), I was responsible for tutoring my sister every day. Her learning disabilities required me to be understanding and pragmatic in my approach. While in high school, I helped my peers succeed in their IB exams. In college and medical school, I created study groups and organized review sessions. Helping my sister and peers has been truly rewarding. These experiences were demanding but also enjoyable, and I have become a better person as a consequence.

Approach

First, I like to make sure that the foundations and fundamental concepts are well understood. I prepare notes summarizing the main ideas and review them with students. Then, practice makes perfect with exercises of increasing difficulty. Finally, we look at the application of our knowledge so that students see the bigger picture and engage with the material. Throughout the process, I emphasize the importance of being organized and disciplined through positive reinforcement.

Anatomy Physiology I Tutoring

At UC San Diego, I have taken two lecture courses in Physiology and one laboratory course. I was lucky to have the same excellent teaching assistants for both professors that taught me in this subject. With my interest in class and my initiative to form study groups, I formed close relationships with both professors and teaching assistants alike. I learned much on the subject throughout my Bachelor's of Science in Physiology & Neuroscience. DISCLAIMER: Anatomy was not a focus of my classes and I am not qualified to tutor Anatomy.

Biochemistry Tutoring

At UC San Diego, I received an A in upper-division Metabolic Biochemistry. In the MCAT (pre-medical exam), I scored among the top 3% in the Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems section. I have taken extensive notes in this subject and attended my professor's office hours.

Study Skills Tutoring

Keeping a 3.6 GPA at UC San Diego and scoring in the 98th percentile (top 2%) in the MCAT (pre-medical exam) required dedication, but most importantly disciplined and efficient study skills. I still had time and energy to research part-time and pursue other passions of mine. For me, planning and organizing my study habits allows me to visualize and keep focus on my goals. I try to transmit this idea to my students so they may enjoy learning while they study.
