Fun Facts
I home schooled my six children and a few step-children and am very grateful for that experience which occupied my life from 1992-2016. I also taught some classes in a private school, and that also helped me keep up with current and changing knowledge. My days have not been filled with home schooling for years, but as taught for so long, it has been natural for me to gravitate toward tutoring as a job. In my free time, I am able to garden, watch movies, travel, and visit the grands.
About Me
I graduated with two bachelor degrees (with High Honors) from Friends University in Wichita, KS. I studied Religion & Philosophy (Youth Ministry), and Fine Arts (Music), then worked in youth ministry for several years in a Friends (Quaker) church in Portland, OR, before returning to Colorado to work in our church's youth and camping programs. I was Outstanding Religion & Philosophy Student for my graduation year. I was a member of the Concert Choir, a music sorority, active in student government, and worked in the library. I also actually began my tutoring career in college. My first student was (I kid you not...) a college student who did not know how to read. I found I had a good gift of explanation and was able to be clear, detailed, and encouraging as I taught. I continue to add to my knowledge through reading (and audio books) which are a balance of fiction and non-fiction. I am involved in several study groups, and enjoy a good documentary and other learning opportunities. I like to binge a TV program from beginning to end, and watch about anything on Discovery+.
Experience
I began tutoring in college. As a home school mom, I worked with many different curriculums including those from public home-based programs. I worked for 5 years as a certified Tutor for Struggling Readers for a foundation providing improvement in literacy (through EBLI reading program) & math skills. I have experience working with dyslexic students & students with other special needs. I have tutored full-time with several home schooled students, and tutored privately since 2016.
Approach
I love to see the 'light come on' as a student suddenly understands the concept at hand. I believe in asking leading questions so the student can draw on personal knowledge & often deduce answer. Positive reinforcement is important. I believe in structuring a lesson to the student's individual learning style. When tutoring students in standardized testing, we approach each question by looking at the answers first which is counterintuitive to how questions/answers are presented in school.
