Fun Facts
One of my favorite things to do is dance, whether it is performing or just in my living room. I dance hip hop, jazz, samba and I have even done some step. At school I am a part of Au in Motion, a student run dance team. Both of my parent are immigrants from the Dominican Republic so I am fluent in Spanish. My favorite sport is basketball, although I am not very good at playing it. In fact I was a benchwarmer in high school, but I still loved it. Lastly, I love to cook! Especially desserts.
About Me
Hi, my name is Jessica Placencia. I am a public communications major and marketing minor at American University (Class of 2015). Marketing and advertising are two passions of mine and the fields I would like to go into. I was born and raised in Washington Heights in New York City. The Height's vibrance and personality is a big part of who I am and how I approach learning and teaching.
In high school I tutored two kids in different subjects. As a freshman in high school I tutored a middle schooler in Pre-Algebra and Algebra. As a Senior in high school I tutored a junior in Spanish II. I also have a little brother (11 years old) and have babysat many kids. I have done plenty of homework helping.
No two tutees are alike and that is something to always keep in mind. Some students need to write things down, some students need visual aids. Learning material is all about breaking it down into pieces that are understandable. That is my main approach when it comes to washington-dc">tutoring--breaking down and building up course or test material to develop a higher level of understanding. In my experience with kids, sometimes they just need someone to sit down with them and encourage them and keep them focused.
