Fun Facts

I love animals in general, and cats in particular. I am also an avid reader and writer. I read everything from nonfiction to fantasy to historical fiction. I have traveled throughout much of the United States and have also visited Japan, South Korea, England, France, Italy, Spain, and Germany.

About Me

I am a graduate student at San Jose State University, currently working on my MFA in Creative Writing. I earned Dean's Honors throughout most of my undergraduate career and have been published in the literary magazine Red Wheelbarrow. I am a copyeditor for Reed Magazine.

Experience

I have worked previously as an Instructional Student Assistant at San Jose State University. I held weekly hours at a campus Writing Center, where I tutored students in basic writing skills and helped them edit their papers. I have experience working with students who speak English as a second language. I am interested in becoming a TA, and gaining tutoring experience will assist me in that goal.

Approach

I understand that every student's needs are different and adjust my approach based on the individual. I am patient and always maintain a positive attitude. I encourage students' strengths and offer specific, constructive criticism on areas where they could improve. As a tutor, I make sure to praise students' successes to keep them motivated. I have always done well in school, and hope to teach other students to do the same.

English Tutoring

I took AP English in high school and passed the AP Exam with a perfect score of 5. I have taken numerous English classes since then for my undergraduate degree in Literature and my ongoing graduate degree in Creative Writing. While working as an Instructional Student Assistant last year, one of my main duties was helping students revise their essays.

Literature Tutoring

My undergraduate degree at UC Santa Cruz was in Literature. I have studied a variety of texts, ranging from the Indian epic 'The Ramayana' to Shakespeare's plays to Dante's 'Inferno.'

Reading Comprehension Tutoring

Since I have studied both Literature and Creative Writing, I have experience in reading and interpreting a variety of texts. I have participated in informal study groups for classes as well as formal tutoring. As an Instructional Student Assistant, I read assigned texts and went over them with students to ensure they understood the material.

Study Skills Tutoring

I have always earned good grades in part because of my diligent studying. I recognize that different skills work better for different people, and will suggest strategies based on a student's existing skills. I know how to encourage students from my experiences in study groups and workshops, as well as from my job as an Instructional Student Assistant.

Writing Tutoring

My in-progress graduate degree in Creative Writing has polished my ability to write clearly and memorably. I have written everything from scholarship essays to research papers to essays on literary works. My fiction has been published in the literary magazine Red Wheelbarrow. In my previous job as an Instructional Student Assistant, I helped students brainstorm and edit their essays.

AP English Tutoring

I took AP English in high school. I earned an A in the class and scored a perfect 5 on the AP Exam. My teacher for AP English later wrote a recommendation letter for me. Since then, I have continued to study English for my undergraduate degree in Literature and my in-progress graduate degree in Creative Writing.
