Fun Facts

I am of Sri Lankan descent and my background makes me enthusiastic about learning about and experiencing other cultures. Besides Sri Lanka, I've been to 10 European countries after studying abroad in Rome a couple semesters ago and just this past summer I was able to visit family in Australia. For me, one of the best parts of traveling is trying different foods! I'm very open-minded and I'm not afraid to try any kind of dish no matter how strange it may seem.

About Me

I am an upcoming Senior at chicago">Loyola University Chicago. I started my undergraduate career with the intent of pursuing international or immigration law, but that soon changed after I enrolled in an Introduction to Social Work course. I have always enjoyed volunteering, but this kind of course and fieldwork allowed me to develop a strong interest in the NGO/non-profit/social service sector. My future plans have now changed to include a dual degree in Social Work and Law following graduation next spring.

As a volunteer chicago">tutor with RefugeeOne, I have been helping an elementary school-aged refugee girl in her English and Math for the past two years. I have also tutored a middle school-aged boy in all his subjects and assisted him in improving his homework and study skills. Additionally, I have experience holding weekly chicago">tutoring sessions consisting of a group of young children in all their school subjects.

I like to spend a little time just letting my tutees do their work as they normally do so I can get an idea of the skills and approach they have and what needs attention. Then I feel like I can better help them in the subject or subjects that they may struggle with. I also feel like the more they trust and feel comfortable with me the more likely they are to tell or show me what they feel are they weaknesses and strengths. Especially in chicago">tutoring older students, I tell them enough about myself to separate myself from their teachers; I think it's important for them see their chicago">tutor as relatable in order to know that their improvement or goals are attainable, not something only older people can achieve.
