I have a curious nature. I love to discover things, whether that is in the lab, or about the latest space or medicine development, or about a topic discussed on Sunday morning. My dad helped build the landing radar for the Surveyor spacecraft that landed on the Moon before the manned Apollo missions. I have been interested in science ever since
About Me
I earned my Eagle Scout award very quickly, then helped with council-wide projects in an all-Eagle Explorer Post, and enjoyed rock climbing. I was in student council in high school, and was on the cheerleading team as Yell Leader. I college I did 3 research projects on my way to my degree in chemistry. Sr year I was President of the very active International Folk Dance Club and produced and directed the Spring Show which involved 35 dancers, 29 dances, 7 costume changes, lighting, music, and I even played during intermission as a member of the marimba band.
I find most students struggle either because they have not yet learned how to learn (sometimes having a non-visual learning style), or fell off the Math Train at some point (as early as 3rd or 4th grade). So study skills are a big part of what I preach. With math I confirm the fundamentals are strong (+-×÷) and proceed up the math ladder from there. Squares and cubes, fraction/decimal conversions, and prime numbers are next.
Always positive and enthusiastic I build the student's confidence that they can succeed.
Experience
I have been doing training since teaching Morse code as a scout patrol leader. Learning to translate complex science topics for my non-science college friends still helps me today. I conducted training in some way in every job I have held, including 3 years as a high school chemistry/science teacher in Los Angeles. After relocating to harbor">Gig Harbor I have developed a successful tutoring and test prep practice. Students ranged from middle and high school students to Running Start, college, & nursing
Approach
My goal is to identify what is holding a student back, and then make a better student by improving study practices. I believe in being an encourager and building confidence. This usually involves reinforcing fundamentals, whatever the topic, and building up from there. I help students maximize the gifts they have and work around any weaknesses. Most students work hard and I help them get the most from their time and effort.
