Fun Facts

My hobbies include exploring, and that often ends at my local farmer's market. I love watching the Food Network and Travel Channel on television, especially because it inspires me to create yummy, strange, and healthy dishes. When the television isn't on, I certainly enjoy my quiet time. I read poetry. I love to paint and listen to classic rock. I believe cleaning can be therapeutic. I like to enjoy the essence of myself and others while embracing the simplicities in life.

About Me

My name is Alyssa Weil. I'm a rising sophomore studying at American University. Coming from a large family with three younger siblings, working with children is something I have learned to love. I am a patient and friendly teacher, yet a dedicated and goal-driven student. Education has always been something I am very passionate about. My aim is to provide children with the assistance they need to be successful, and be the best washington-dc">tutor I can be.

washington-dc">Tutoring is something I have been surrounded by my entire life. First, I had been provided with home instruction while I was out sick during high school. Soon after, my mother began washington-dc">tutoring children herself. Presently, I volunteer at the Huntington Learning Center with my mother, where she is an assistant director.

At Huntington, I have worked with elementary age children specifically in the Language Arts/English subjects. This includes concepts such as making inferences, drawing conclusions, parts of speech, using words in sentences, and reading-comprehension/virginia/washington-dc">reading comprehension. Most of the work is done out of workbooks in standardize test format (color in the bubbles). I check over their work and explain why the incorrect answer is incorrect, then work together to find the correct one. After discussing the issues, I always enjoy seeing them improve.

I am familiar with several types of "tips and tricks" that can help a student improve: whether this may mean placing an index card under a paragraph to avoid getting overwhelmed by a page with a lot of text, to using graph paper to line up math problems. For some children, the main issue can be just getting organized or showing their work to avoid making simple mistakes.

When it comes to reading-comprehension/virginia/washington-dc">reading comprehension, I like to take turns reading passages to make sure the student understands what they're reading. Next, I allow them to answer the questions of their own without any help. Later, we can discuss both the correct and incorrect answers.

My washington-dc">tutoring approach aims to make students feel empowe
