Fun Facts

I am a bilingual English-Arabic speaker, and I love cooking dishes from both the East and West (which I am really good at). I also love belly-dancing and working out. However, what I enjoy the most in my free time is experimenting with makeup—nothing beats the joy that art and colors can bring into my life!

About Me

I have completed my master's degree with distinction at the Department of Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies—namely in the TESOL (Teaching English for Speakers of Other Languages) Program. I have always maintained a GPA of 4.23 and been on the Dean’s List every year. I hold a BA in Professional Writing from the English Department at the University of New Mexico and minors in Arabic and in communication and journalism. I look forward to going on with my PhD study one day and working on a dissertation project that contributes to the growth of our educational practices.

Experience

As both a graduate and undergraduate student, I had the chance to teach students with diverse linguistic resources in classes like ENGL 110 and ENGL 120. I have also taken many classes--such as Composition Theory, and Tutoring Writing--which have prepared me with both the theories and the practices needed to help students with their writing. As for my ESL expertise, beside my current focus on TESOL in graduate school, I have worked internationally as a second language teacher.

Approach

As a tutor, I work hard to be a learning facilitator--Instead of giving students answers, I feel it is my responsibility to not only teach them the content but study skills that will help them be successful in all classes. I balance positive feedback with points that still need improvement because both can be sources of learning, and I build on my students' zone of proximal development to scaffold each at their own pace and through their unique resources.
