Fun Facts

At one time, I think I tried to memorize all of the counties and county seats of Texas, because I'm a geography buff. But there are just too many!

About Me

I grew up in Reno, NV, also known as "The Biggest Little City In The World," and went to college locally there at the University of Nevada to get a Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry. Then I went on to complete a Master of Science program in physician assistant studies at Western University of Health Sciences. I guess you might say I like science. But after this, I wanted a change. So I worked as a substitute teacher for grades K-12 for about 4 years, as well as for the federal gov.

Experience

Aside from substitute teaching for about 4 years at the K-12 level in public schools, I have volunteered as a homework assistant, helping mostly elementary and middle school students with various assignments, but oftentimes the STEM type of homework. This volunteer experience was at a Boys & Girls Club, an elementary school, and at a community library.

Approach

More than anything, I like to be able to genuinely help a student, and so, at the beginning, I like to get a good idea of where the need lies by actively listening to the student and responding accordingly. I don't think it's the best approach to just dive in talking about a subject and potentially leave the pupil in a state of consternation or disinterest, so I do like to give students a chance to tell me what we need to work on and let them sort of direct the activity.
