About Me
I am a 25 year old, married female. For the past two years, I have lived and worked abroad in South Korea while my husband (a Korean) served in the Korean special forces. I speak Korean at an intermediate level, and plan to pursue learning Spanish as well. Languages really interest me! I plan to pursue a PhD after I complete my Master's in Communication Disorders (Speech Language Pathology), with a research emphasis on bilingualism and disorders/delays among the ESL population.
I have been tutoring for a total of five years. For three years of my undergraduate career, I tutored both students with autism and inner city Elementary school students. Most of my tutoring experience was in reading, English, writing, and math.
For two years while living in Korea, I tutored children ranging from age 4-17 in English, reading, writing, science, and math. My specialty was with English, but I'm talented with Math as well. I also tutored professional adults as well that worked with companies such as Samsung, Oracle, and Samsung Hospital in both business and medical English. Three months prior to leaving Korea, I worked for the Princeton Review as an SAT instructor.
For me, I believe the best tutoring approach is to work your student as an individual is extremely important. Tailoring your approach to meet the student’s needs is crucial to the student's success. At the same time, there are universals that apply to every student. I always make sure to encourage students firmly and have them worked for a period of time, then follow that up with a short break between activities. Also, if there are multiple tasks to be done, I let the student pick the order of what's being done and have them write the order down on a sheet of paper. They then get to cross off each item as we accomplish it. Finally, I believe in direct communication with the parents through (1) spending at least 5-10 minutes talking with the parents about what happened during tutoring that day and (2) providing the parent with an updated excel spreadsheet (or some other kind of "proof") monthly so that the parent can see the progress their child is making.
