Reading Comprehension Tutoring

I have found that in order for students to be able to comprehend reading material they must be proficient in decoding and be familiar with the vocabulary they will encounter when they are reading. Once they have mastered these skills I give them more active strategies such as having the student make a prediction about what they are going to read or tell me what they have read verbally. The strategies of having students using illustrations in the story and asking them to create a mental image of what they read are techniques I have found to be beneficial.
