Fun Facts

I am the biggest STAR WARS/Star Trek/Disney fan that ever lived, and I always find a way to incorporate that in my lessons, as well as DC Comics and Marvel Superheroes. I am a very musical person (my two sisters and I grew up in a musical family) as well with a specialty in a capella music and arrangement (I did have an a capella trio way back when and I sang Barbershop Quartet singing back in the day). Outside of that, I am an avid reader, jigsaw puzzle master and host a radio show.

About Me

I am a four-year teacher with a Master of Art in Teaching and a Master of Education Degree in Reading and ESL. I have extensive experience in Elementary Math, Reading, and Writing strategies, STAAR Test Prep and can bring up scores for ESL students by discovering where any "barriers" are (this also hold true to my Special Education students) and work with them to push through them. Within these 4 years, I have engaged students in Small Group or one-on-one tutoring.

Experience

Along with having taught Pre-K, 3rd, and 4th Graders in Math, Reading, Writing, Science, Social Studies, I also am an active tutor in the D/FW Metroplex for Foster Kids iwho also have challenges in Reading Fluency, Comprehension, Sequencing and Retelling. I also work on building their confidence when it comes to any form of math that, at the moment, seems challenging to them or almost impossible. When they discover they know more than they thought they did, it makes what we do all worth it.

Approach

I was that kid in Special Skills classes when I was in elementary school, so I understand the frustration that can comes from not fully understanding a concept. I also know how such a mind set paralyses the brain and makes it hard to learn. It wasn't until the last month in 8th Grade that things actually started to make sense, and that I can trust what I saw myself accomplishing to be real. This is what I do with my students I tutor, and although it takes awhile, they make the same discovery.

Homework Coach Tutoring

There is a method for effectively completing homework, and cramming is not it. Cramming stresses the mind and will retain little to nothing. Pacing, taking small mental breaks, and eliminating phone/tablet distractions is how to get the job done. This works across the board in all subjects, especially Math, Reading, and Science.

Math Tutoring

From Base-10 to place value, Leaf-Stem to Reflections on the x or y axis is where I can give the best assistance for students struggling in this content, including fractions, decimals and percentages.

Elementary Math Tutoring

Concepts like angles, dimensional and dimensional shapes, equivalent fractions, 2-digit multiplication and addition/subtraction can be daunting for elementary kids. I recognize where the frustration is and how to alleviate it. Differentiation in instruction is what gets the job done.

Reading Comprehension Tutoring

Predictions/inference, sequencing, main idea, summarization, grammar, sentence structure, this is where I live, all day, every day. I look forward to making students masters like me in these and other aspects of reading comprehension.

Science Tutoring

Students have to care about the significance of science and how it impacts everyday life. This is a subject where they need to get involved with the learning process. If they get a hand in learning and DOING science, they get to understand it.

Social Studies Tutoring

Students have to know the actions of people in the past make a lot of things we take for granted today possible. They need to see and understand the struggles and accomplishments that took place so they can live a somewhat life of ease. Getting them in an action-based involvement in learning Social Studies is what makes it meaningful and impactful instead of learning a boring set of facts and dates.

Study Skills Tutoring

Studying is more than memorizing terms and concepts. Create your own questions, compare life experiences with the content you're studying for, associate an action with a term or definition. Studying is not where you just sit with a textbook or worksheet. There are methods to studying, and I can help those methods make sense.

ESL/ESOL Tutoring

English is a complicated language, especially since other languages don't have as many "exceptions" as English does. ESL/ESOL students need to know how to use contractions, understand idioms, slang, mashup words (Rock-tober, Saleabration), and other conversational norms. We walk that path together, and take however long it takes. It's all about success and understanding.

English Tutoring

I teach students how important The Order of Operations (PEMDAS) is in every Math Question. I also show them the Art of marking questions so the can answer two key problem-solving questions: What am I trying to solve? What information am I given? Above all, however, it is imperative to show your work on the test so that you know that you know the correct answer. There are pitfalls and traps.

STAAR Math Tutoring

Above all, however, it is imperative to show your work on the test so that you know that you know the correct answer. There are pitfalls and traps.

STAAR Prep Tutoring

The STAAR Test takes time, and no one has ever guessed their way toward passing. The flip side of that coin is the testing strategies take time, but they are proven and they work. Underlining key pieces of information, circling key words, staying within the information given ONLY, among other things, is what I demonstrate and coach kids through toward success. Discipline can be a drag, but success makes it well worth it.

STAAR Reading Tutoring

I teach students how important "starting with the end in mind" is when it comes to this section of the test. Before reading, go to the questions first, find specified paragraphs and mark them, strengthen summarization skills. There are pitfalls and traps, like knowing if a given summary is to include the beginning and middle, or the beginning-middle-end? Is there a word that can change the meaning of the test question? Some student love reading, but reading strategically is the name of the game.

STAAR Science Tutoring

Science is about knowing your facts and figures. The other side of the coin is knowing how to synthesize that knowledge in abstract questions. For example, you may know The Water Cycle, but do you know why Evaporation occur more in oceans than any other body of water? You know throwing a switch turns the light on, but why does that create a closed circuit and not an open circuit? We walk through those scenarios, and students become science experts.

History Tutoring

History: Who? What? Where? When? Why? and sometimes How? If you don't find out these questions, you won't do well. If you don't know how to "skim and scan", History can seem like such a chore. If you don't highlight the people, the places, the events in the book or write those facts down, you'll always be lost and not in the know. This is what I help students with, and students become history buffs, especially if they can make connections.

Reading Tutoring

Reading can be boring, but if you learn how to read informationally, even with a work of fiction, you'll be able to get into the content, comprehend it, maybe ask clarity questions, and be able to participate in reading discussions. that's what they become when they work with me. Also, if you come across a $50 or $100 word and don't know its meaning, comprehension is next to impossible. I teach them how to utilize resources to learn those words, bringing them down to size.

Writing Tutoring

Many think they have no writing skills. That can be attributed to fear of failure or embarrassment. I teach them how they can incorporate who they are into anything they write, and how reading comprehension is directly tied to writing. Students can intimidate and overwhelm themselves when they think they have to use "big words" in their writing. So we work on building vocabulary and "translating it" into language they can understand. It work, but it's worth it.
