Fun Facts

I love family history research. I have researched my family tree back to the 1600s for some lines (which is very exciting to me!). I took piano lessons for 10 years and enjoy listening to and playing all sorts of music. I love animals and would love to have a German Shepherd someday.

About Me

I am a senior at IUPUI (Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis), studying to be an elementary teacher. I am also earning a dual license in ESL. While I have interests in most areas, I especially enjoy English and writing.

Most people would use words like dependable, caring, and respectful to describe me. I am a warm person who really likes to be helpful and see other people succeed.

I began indianapolis">tutoring Japanese English-language-learners in August 2009. I worked with elementary students on reading, writing, verbal communication skills, and homework. I am beginning my fourth year indianapolis">tutoring Japanese students.

I also tutored at a community center on the Near Eastside of Indianapolis. Elementary students from nearby schools attended an after-school program at this community center. I tutored for two hours per week from September 2010-May 2012.

Initially, I ask students what they feel they want/need to work on. If possible, I also ask parents what the child needs help with. In a typical session, I generally work with students on homework first, then proceed to developing whatever skills they may have expressed a desire to work on. If a student wanted help developing writing skills, for example, we might set aside a specific time to work on a long-term writing project.

My goal is to provide learner-centered support to the student. For example, book choices are always based off of students' interests. I believe students become more engaged and learn more when material is contextualized in their lived experiences and interests. I also believe in the importance of challenging students to fulfill their potential as learners. Finally, I work alongside the student whenever possible, as opposed to simply telling the student how to do something.
