Fun Facts
I am passionate about nature and love to take walks in nature. I love to travel to visit natural places and take photos. I am collecting photos to include in a book that I am writing about the power of connecting with nature. I have visited almost every state in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and Europe!
I love animals and have 2 Standard Poodles and 2 Ragdoll cats! My preferences for exercise are walking followed by yoga, pilates, and dancing.
About Me
I'm a life-long learner and teacher. I studied early childhood, elementary, special and bilingual education at Wheelock College in Boston, MA before moving to Texas. After teaching special education, I pursued a Masters in Supervision of Curriculum and Instruction at UTSA. Later I earned a Ph.D. in early childhood education from Walden University while I was serving as a college professor teaching people wanting to be educators.
Experience
My experiences are varied; I taught early childhood, elementary, special education, ESL, middle and high schoolers, college students and adult learners! Working for non-profit organizations, I gained experience as a program evaluator, researcher, curriculum developer, professional development consultant, TV teacher, educational coach, producer for educational videos, and teacher of incarcerated youth in a state school. I have taught college students pursuing a degree education for 18 years.
Approach
I love the teaching and learning process! My approach, depending on content, is creative, using props and materials in hands-on and experiential learning experiences. I love to address the whole person (cognitive, physical, language, and social-emotional). One must see oneself as a capable learner to succeed. My job is to help the learner remove blocks that interfere with that success. I accomplish that through a variety of techniques that are powerful and allow the learner to achieve goals.

PhdHomework Coach Tutoring
I have many years experience tutoring students in elementary through college level. I support students by coaching them on their homework assignments, helping them find structures to put in place to be successful, and learning study tips to help them focus their study time more efficiently.
Reading Comprehension Tutoring
As an educator, I have taken many reading courses and have taught reading. Comprehending what you read is critical to the reading process. I teach reading skills in the content areas as well as reading literature. I provide students with structures for "pre-reading" to help scaffold the reader to know what to expect once reading begins. By asking questions along the way, the reader enhances comprehension.
Spanish I Tutoring
I earned the Spanish prize for excellence in Spanish in my high school during my junior year. I went on to learn Spanish in college and lived in Mexico for nearly 7 months to study Spanish and the culture. I have taught in bilingual settings and have tutored non-Spanish speaking students and adults in Spanish vocabulary and grammar equivalent to Spanish I.
Spanish II Tutoring
I earned the Spanish prize for excellence in Spanish while a junior in high school. I went on to learn Spanish at the college level and studied abroad in Mexico for nearly 7 months to learn Spanish and the culture. I have taught/tutored non-Spanish speaking people elementary Spanish I and II.
Study Skills Tutoring
As an educator, one of the things I have had to teach students is how to approach their studies so that they can learn more efficiently and effectively. These include such things as time management, organization, breaking large units into sizable chunks, goal setting, use of memory devices, highlighting, note taking, and many more skills.
Writing Tutoring
I am a strong writer and proof-reader. This has come from lots of practice in writing. I earned the outstanding dissertation award for my doctoral dissertation from the Merrill-Prentice Hall Publishing Company and the National Association for Early Childhood Teacher Educators. I have experience in helping students craft their written assignments. I like to use a process writing approach.
Arts Tutoring
I minored in theatre arts in college and have taught courses in developing creative expression in children through the arts. It's one of my favorite areas -- creative expression, whether it be through the visual arts, useable arts, dramatic arts, literary arts, or music.
English Tutoring
I have taught grammar and mechanics in English, writing, and literature. My skills are in editing and proofreading for English written expression. I've led book discussions where we examine various written genres critically from different points of view.
Spanish Tutoring
While pursuing Spanish as a minor in college, I lived in Mexico and studied Spanish and culture. I returned to teach in bilingual settings. I have taught non-Spanish speaking students elementary Spanish (vocabulary, verb conjugation, sentence structure, and simple conversations for daily situations).
