About Me
I graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 2007 with a bachelors of science in chemistry. My gpa was 3.65. I serve in the Navy as a Surface Warfare Officer; essentially I drive warships. My current duty assignment will be my last in the Navy and I will be pursuing an advanced degree in chemical engineering when I depart the service.
In college, I participated in an elementary school tutoring program called "Mids for Kids." On a weekly basis, I would provide one on one tutoring to struggling 3rd and 4th graders during the school day. Topics covered were reading, writing, and arithmetic. I also provided informal tutoring to other Naval Academy students in chemistry, physics, and calculus courses. I currently provide informal tutoring to an elementary school student and a middle school student with primary emphasis on mathematics and reading-comprehension/california/san-diego">reading comprehension.
I was home schooled from 3rd grade through high school. My parents were not subject matter experts in all topics so I was quite often forced to rely solely on text books to learn the course material. I developed strong skills in deciphering the often confusing nature of text book lingo and identifying the truly important content. My tutoring approach follows the same lines, all the information is available, it just takes some digging and guidance to find it. Tutoring is not about providing the answers, it is about keeping the student accountable and on track so they can discover understanding on their own.
