Fun Facts

I currently live in Ferndale, MI with my wife and our 3 cats. My wife Katie just started graduate school at Wayne State in Urban Planning. I have been playing the piano for 20 years now and was in the Jazz Band at central-michigan-university">Central Michigan University.

About Me

To start, I love teaching and helping students. I knew from the 8th grade that I wanted to be a teacher based on the great experiences I had. I graduated from central-michigan-university">Central Michigan University with a Major in History and Minor in Geography. I then went back for my Masters in Secondary Education with a certification to teach 6-12 History.

When it comes to detroit">tutoring, I take the same approach when I teach. First I get to know the student, find out their interests and what they like. Students are more willing to learn and enjoy the subject material when they are relaxed. When I'm actually detroit">tutoring and going through homework, I let my students work out the problems for themselves with me being their for support. We see if the answer was correct and if not, find out what happened along the way to solve the problem. I always praise students for what they have done, even if they came up with the wrong answer. Somewhere along the way, something was right so I acknowledge that and work around that aspect. Once the concept has been learned by the student, I use repetition with more problems to re-enforce the idea that if you can solve one problem, you can solve them all.

I have done extensive substitute work in the Mid-Michigan area. While my focus in school was upper level, most of my substitute work was done for Elementary grade levels. I worked primarily at Hillcrest Elementary in Alma, MI. I start doing para-pro work for Title 1 students in Reading and Math. Once the school saw how great I interacted with students, every teacher wanted me to substitute for them when they would be gone. This was great for me and the students. I was soon known as Mr. Jacobs to everyone, even if I wasn't a full time employee. I loved exploring new subjects with students and helping them learn to the best of their ability.
