Fun Facts

My childhood in Hawaii has greatly influenced me to become the avid out doors person I am today. I enjoy most activities under the sun, whether it is going to the beach, hiking, swimming, or fishing. In high school I was a competitive swimmer and water polo player, and still enjoy fitness and health. I also enjoy activities that promote creativity and self-expression, including drawing, painting, writing, and practicing yoga.

About Me

My name is Kayla Ganir and I am from Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. I attended Kamehameha Kapalama High SchooI, Hawaii's private institution for native Hawaiian children. I am currently an incoming Junior at Seattle University and am pursuing a major in English and a double minor in political science and writing studies. My ultimate goal is to attend law school and specialize in social justice.

Experience

My mother is a former elementary school teacher, which has given me a lot of experience assisting in classrooms, school offices, and field trips. As an English major, I am very familiar and enthusiastic about writing workshops and peer editing. This has offered me valuable experience engaging with others and their own various projects, including interpretive, research, argumentative, and creative writing papers. I always enjoy collaborating with fellow writers and gaining new perspectives.

Approach

Everyone has their own stylized way of learning. It is my goal to first ask my students about their strengths, weaknesses, and what study methods they find most beneficial. This will help me establish successful and study schedules contingent to each student’s needs. When writing, the most important element for a successful paper is organization. I will help students refine their outlining, close reading, and revising skills so they can cultivate their own reliable, systematic, writing process.

English Tutoring

As a English major and writing studies minor, the english department has become my second home. In respect to college level courses, I have completed all level entry courses to the english major, including English 2000 Literary Studies, British Literature I and II, and American Literature. I have ventured into more specific english classes such as environmental literature and medieval sexualities, which show the relevance between present political issues and literature. I also have experience with introductory philosophy classes, which has proven useful when making interpretive arguments while writing essays.

Writing Tutoring

Seattle University has just introduced a writing studies minor, which I have had the privilege in pursuing. I have taken classes in writing, editing, style, grammar, and punctuation, all of which I received As. This gives me extensive knowledge when trying to organize, format, and revise papers so that they are clear and structured. I also have experience with philosophy classes and ethical reasoning, which has proven useful when making interpretive arguments while writing essays.

AP English Tutoring

As a former AP English student, I am familiar with its rigor and curriculum. My field of study as an English major has giving me the experience with literary and critical analysis, composition, and interpretation salient with that of AP English courses. I am able to help students identify imagery, symbolism, tone, and themes in literature to further interpret the messages behind their texts.

Writing Advance Tutoring

One reason why I decided to pursue a major in english and a minor in wiring studies is that writing papers are my favorite academic assignments. I am familiar with writing various types of essays, whether it be interpretive, research, argumentative, or persuasive essays. I also strong at performing close readings and cross examining texts in conversations and reference to each other. I have taken college classes in writing, editing, style, grammar, and punctuation, all of which I received As. This gives me extensive knowledge when trying to organize, format, and revise papers so that they are clear and structured.

Reading Comprehension Tutoring

Though it is evident I do a lot of heavy reading as an English major, my other courses and minors have prompted me to read a wide spectrum of topics and materials. My english courses have trained me in close readings and literally analyses. However, pursuing a political science minor has required me to adjust to a lot of academic reading. I have taken multiple philosophy courses that has also allowed me to cultivate strong reading skills when trying to understand great complex minds such as Aristotle, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Immanuel Kant.

Study Skills Tutoring

I have the most experience working with elementary school kids in respect to tutoring. I understand the importance of cultivating and nurturing education at such a young age. I believe I have the necessary patience and gentle encouraging skills to successfully get through to children and make learning fun. Study skills at this age are important, and often have to do with reading comprehension and writing, all salient to my majors and minors.
