Fun Facts
I have a habit of connecting things to math. People don't realize that math isn't just numbers, but expressions that are different from sentences. From describing the way waves move to coming up with equations for a balloon's outer surface, kids begin to see that everywhere around them, everything can be deduced to an equation.
About Me
I am a middle school science teacher at Al madinah school. I teach regents algebra 1 to a selected number of 8 th graders. I have taught a total of 90 science students and 30 algebra students. All 90 students scored 80 or above on the Intermediate 8 grade science test, and 29 have passed the regents with. 81 or above. (The last one passed with 77).
Experience
I personally did not feel the full learning experience in my elementary and middle school years. I wanted to receive the type of help that has me feeling no pressure, where I don't have to think about the grades, but about what I'm learning. I always have my students know that grades is something to worry about only after you u derstamd the lesson, so they can be relieved of just getting a good grade first. That mentality of high grades is what distracts students from knowing the lesson first.
Approach
My method consists of first taking a diagnostic of the child’s skills in the previous grade. That way I can see if any skills lacking from what the child learned before starting the new grade. I always like to start out every lesson with a quick drill. Then we would review it looking for errors to complete the understanding. I would discuss with the student a new lesson, provide a longer drill, and observe them doing it. I would then discuss the new drill and outline the student's errors.
