Fun Facts

I love living near my family; as it turns out I have lived on both coasts of the USA,and in the midwest. For a decade now, I’ve lived in Texas. I love the Pacific NW rainforest and Mt Rainier, and I love Virginia Beach and the gulf waters. Both the outdoors and the city are invigorating to me. Houston is the most vibrant city I know of, with resilient and compassionate people; I love this city! Meeting my husband taught me that musicians are not the only abstract thinkers. He’s a Physicist

About Me

I recently completed my Master's Degree, with the same GPA as my undergraduate, which earned me Cum Laude honors. I love learning and have a passion for teaching, I guess I am addicted to academia! Music is my hobby, as is reading Greek. I love teaching both of these, and will actually teach most anything. Teaching is a joy, and I take pleasure in encouraging my students!

Experience

I have experience teaching grades K-12, which has taught me volumes about developmental stages. I loved working with young adults and adults as Music Director of two US Naval Chapels, teaching and directing voice and coordinating ensembles from the Armed Forces School of Music. I have been teaching music as a substitute teacher and teaching private piano and theory, and voice lessons. I am a happy teacher; I love my work!

Approach

I enjoy listening to students and learning how they best achieve, and how I can best help them achieve their goals in learning, individually. I very much enjoy offering varied ideas for problem solving and meeting goals and deadlines students may face. I have found that encouragement and praise, with realistic goal-setting, along with tailoring lessons to the individual student’s needs make for successful tutor sessions and amazing, satisfying ongoing progress.

Arts Tutoring

9 semesters piano studies (A grades) as an undergrad student, with Dr C Knapp of Julliard. My childhood piano teacher was Mrs J Heidemann, of the Chicago Symphony. I earned music and academic scholarships as both an undergrad and in my graduate studies. I love teaching music theory !

Religion Tutoring

As and undergrad music major, I took all my history coursework as history of religion, as well as studying ancient Greek, and altogether I nearly earned a minor in religion, just less than a credit short. I pursued my studies in graduate school, with a 3.48 GPA and in my last year of school I worked as a TA in Greek language classes, my concentration. Music and academic scholarships were awarded me in both undergrad and grad school.

Writing Tutoring

While my husband completed his PhD at Yale University, I worked and studied in Hellenic Greek Department. I also worked as personal assistant to Yale World Fellow Hauwa Ibrahim, 2005. I had the wonderful experience of helping her write, and also tutored other students through the campus tutoring center — in English writing/composition/grammar, over a period of a few years.

English Tutoring

In graduate school I tutored Ivy League students in their writing and composition / grammar skills. English/writing could easily have been my major, as I truly enjoy writing and teaching others how to do so.

Math Tutoring

Math and music are related, and I have appreciated having increased math skills due to my study in music and application of math in everyday life. My college years of study include coursework in Modern Elementary Math, and I am confident I can help students in this subject. My husband is a double math/physics major, so my skills are frequently reinforced !

Elementary Math Tutoring

Math and music are related, and I have appreciated having increased math skills due to my study in music and application of math in everyday life. My college years of study include coursework in Modern Elementary Math, and I am confident I can help students in this subject. My husband is a double math/physics major, so my skills are frequently reinforced !

Reading Comprehension Tutoring

I have a personal success story with reading comprehension. As an elementary student I participated in a remedial reading program. I am now a speed reader and with full comprehension, affording me success with A grades throughout my college career.

Social Studies Tutoring

Social Studies was my first ‘favorite’ subject in elementary school. The expanse of our globe, as well as demographics and sociology fascinate me. This is a very fun subject to teach; I even incorporated it in my music class curriculum. Happy to help in this area of study !

Piano Tutoring

I have well over two decades experience teaching private and class piano, and music theory. Currently I have online students who excel in their theory and keyboard studies and performance. My college years included 9 semesters with Dr. C. Knapp, of the Juilliard School. Very fine training, I am grateful for this experience. My years teaching K-12 classroom music has equipped me well for understanding developmental stages of all ages of children.
